After several retirements, Belinda Bencic is currently the only seeded player remaining on the bottom half of WTA Sydney. The Suisse will be looking to reach WTA Sydney’s semifinals for the first time on her career, but first she must overcome Ekaterina Makarova.

Belinda Bencic (8) vs Ekaterina Makarova
For the first time on her career, Ekaterina Makarova reaches WTA Sydney quarterfinals. After defeating the lucky loser, Lucie Hradecka, on first round, the Russian has benefited from Angelique Kerber’s retirement to book a place on quarterfinals. Makarova is always a tough opponent to face, with very aggressive groundstrokes and great counter punching skills. Ekaterina’s backhand is her most reliable shot, however she’s far from consistent on WTA events. If we look at Makarova’s numbers on last 50 matches against top 20 players on WTA tournaments, the Russian has been far from profitable with -24.2% ROI.

Belinda Bencic is one of the most promising young players on tour, ending 2015 very close from top 10. Belinda is known for her incredible ability to get the ball very early, turning crossed shots into outstanding down the line groundstrokes. It was far from an easy debut for Bencic, who needed three sets to overcome Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in a match where the 18 years old Suisse struggled with her serve, committing 11 double faults. After that slow start, Bencic raised the level to dismiss the 2014 champion, Tsvetana Pironkova, in straight sets. Belinda has been extremely aggressive on return, winning 69.0% of points on 2nd serve return.

This will be the first career contest between these two high quality players.

Both like to hit the ball very early and we should expect a very high pace on the baseline rallies. Makarova has a stronger serve and she can open the court very well from the advantage side with her left-handed serve, but she’s also the most inconsistent player on court. If this match was played next week at Australian Open, there might be some value on Makarova due to her great career record on Majors. However on lower level events, the Russian clearly struggles to perform at the same level. On the other hand, Bencic has achieved some great runs on WTA tournaments, with two titles and one final last year. It won’t be an easy match for Belinda, but her consistency and mental strength might be the key for her success on this match, while Makarova should fire too many unforced errors. With this in mind, we advise to add Belinda Bencic’s tennis odds to your tennis picks.
