Join us on our WTA Strasbourg tournament analysis. We'll look into the main contenders, the player to keep an eye on and also the highest value tennis picks on this event.
It has been a tremendous year for Sloane Stephens so far, winning three titles in 2016 – Auckland, Acapulco and Charleston. When looking at Sloane’s career until this moment, she used to produce her best tennis on the big stages while her performances on smaller tournaments were not so regular, but things have been quite different this year. This is Stephens’ fourth appearance on this event, with the American reaching twice the semifinals in 2012 and 2015.
Sloane is the highest ranked player on bottom half of the draw and she shouldn’t experience many problems on her first two games, where she’ll face Donna Vekic and the winner of the match between Pauline Parmentier and Shuai Zhang. At the quarterfinals Stephens can face Timea Babos and like it happened on their previous encounter in 2012, also in Strasbourg, Stephens should be too strong for the Hungarian. The highest ranked player that Sloane can face in the semifinals is Krsitina Mladenovic; however, the French is far from her best level and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Mladenovic losing on an earlier stage. Having said that, we believe that Sloane has a great draw to win her 4th title in 2016 and for that reason, we suggest adding the American to your tennis picks at +400 on bet365.
The defending champion, Samantha Stosur, is once again one of the main favorites to win the title. It has been a very good clay court season for Stosur so far, reaching the semifinals in Madrid and the final in Prague. Sam loves to compete on clay where her kick serve and heavy spin forehand are extremely effective. The first two matches should be quite easy for the Australian against the American qualifier, Lauren Davis, and Su-Wei Hsieh.
In the quarterfinals a very tough contest is expected against Caroline Garcia, the French is an extremely dangerous player with her powerful game and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Caroline surprising Stosur. If Sam reaches the semifinals she can face another another powerful player – Elena Vesnina or Monica Puig – or one of the best defenders on tour, Sara Errani. Even though Stosur’s positive h2h against all those three players, neither of them is an easy opponent and Sam already lost against all of them. Despite Stosur’s easy start of tournament, the Australian should face very dangerous players on the latter stages of the competition and for that reason, it’s hard for us to find value on her tennis odds for the title at +600 on bet365.
Player to keep an eye on
After a disappointing early loss in Rome against Heather Watson, Sara Errani requested a wild card to play on this event in order to gain some more rhythm on clay. Errani starts her campaign against Monica Puig and, although Monica’s 2 – 0 lead on h2h, this will be their first encounter on clay where Errani’s defensive skills might be too much for Puig to handle. On the following round Sara might face Yaroslava Shvedova and as it happened a few weeks ago in Charleston – where Errani crushed her opponent by 6 – 0 6 – 3 – the Italian should emerge victorious.
Things will only get tougher in the quarterfinals, where Sara might face Heather Watson or Elena Vesnina while at the semifinals, Samantha Stosur is the highest ranked player on Sara’s way. Despite Errani’s difficult draw this week, the Italian is a tremendous competitor and can never be underestimated on clay. For that reason, our suggestion is for you to place a bet on the 2012 French Open runner-up at +1000 on bet365.
