Join us on our Internazionali BNL D'Italia tournament analysis that takes place this week. Find out who is the main favorite as well as the players to keep an eye on this event.

WTA Rome

The Internazionali BNL D’Italia takes place in Rome with clay as the chosen surface for this WTA Premier event.

Main Favorite

Simona Halep couldn’t ask for a better start on the clay-court season. After winning the Mutua Madrid Open title last week, Halep is now the main favorite to lift the trophy in Rome. Despite her undeniable quality on this surface, the transition from Madrid to Rome is never easy. Simona’s campaign on the Internazionali BNL D’Italia is a perfect example of that with the Romanian losing in the opening round after winning the title in Madrid. Adding to this, only one player was able to win consecutive titles in Madrid and Rome – Serena Williams in 2012. Having said that, it’s impossible to find any value on Halep’s outright at +500 at BetVictor.

Former Champion

Playing in Rome brings great memories to Maria Sharapova with an outstanding 26 – 5 career record on this event. Despite her disappointing defeat against Eugenie Bouchard in Madrid, Sharapova has been playing at a very good level since her return to competition. Therefore, it’s not surprising to see Maria one of the main contenders to win the title in Rome for the 4th time in her career.

Looking now at Sharapova’s draw on this event, the Russian won’t have an easy task with very dangerous players on her quarter such as Lucie Safarova, Angelique Kerber or Simona Halep. In addition, Maria might also face her fellow countrywoman – Svetlana Kuznetsova – in the semifinals. Despite the tough draw ahead of her, our advice is for you to place a small bet on Sharapova’s tennis odds to lift the trophy at +800 at Bet365.

Player to Keep an Eye

Known as one of the best clay-court players on the WTA Tour, Carla Suarez Navarro is always a dangerous opponent on this surface. Adding to this, the courts in Rome bring the best out of Suarez Navarro with a remarkable 11 – 4 record on this tournament since 2013. After slow start to 2017, Carla is slowly returning to her best level with good campaigns in Stuttgart and Madrid. When looking at Suarez Navarro’s performances on those two events, the highlight goes to her victory over Caroline Wozniacki in the Mutua Madrid Open 2nd round.

The 2015 Internazionali BNL D’Italia runner-up starts her journey on this year’s edition against Lauren Davis. Despite Lauren’s recent improvements on clay, the American is far from an expert on red dirt. In addition, Davis is still looking for her first career win over Suarez Navarro with the Spaniard leading by 2 – 0 on the h2h. With this in mind, our suggestion is for you to add Carla to your betting picks to defeat Davis this Tuesday at -200 at Pinnacle.

Besides the value on Suarez Navarro’s moneyline in the opening round, the Spaniard might also be an extremely valuable bet in the following round against the 2nd seed – Karolina Pliskova. The slower conditions in Rome are far from ideal for Pliskova’s game style with the Czech losing her previous two matches on this event. Therefore, we recommend you to keep an eye on Suarez Navarro since she might be a great investment throughout the week.
