The Miami Open takes place in Miami with Hard Court as the chosen surface for this event.
Main Contenders – Karolina Pliskova & Angelique Kerber
Due to Serena Williams’ absence, Karolina Pliskova is once again the main favorite to lift the trophy. At the age of 25, Karolina is going through the best moment in her career with a brilliant 19 – 3 record in 2017. After losing in the opening round last season against Timea Babos, this tournament is a great opportunity for Pliskova to shorten the gap to Serena in the WTA ranking.
Looking now at Karolina’s draw in Miami, the world no.3 shouldn’t experience any major problems until the 4th round, where she might face her fellow countrywoman – Barbora Strycova. Known for her ability to change the pace of the rallies with tricky slices, Strycova is never an easy opponent. In fact, Strycova won their most recent encounter on Birmingham’s grass last season in straight sets. Agnieszka Radwanska is the highest ranked player on Pliskova’s quarter and even though the last months haven’t been easy for the Polish, she’s a terrible match-up for Karolina. Radwanska won all their previous seven meetings with Pliskova still trying to win a set against this opponent.
Due to the tough draw ahead of her and the significant amount of tennis played in recent weeks, our recommendation is for you to stay away from Pliskova’s outright at +450 at BetVictor.
Regardless of this tournament’s outcome, one thing is certain, Angelique Kerber will leave Florida as the world no.1. However, the last months haven’t been easy for Kerber with the German winning only 60.00% of the matches played in 2017. Adding to this, Angelique won’t have an easy task in Miami with very dangerous opponents in her quarter such as Darya Kasatkina – the player responsible for 33.33% of Kerber’s defeats this season. Even though Angelique is always a serious contender to lift the trophy, it’s impossible for us to find any value on her current betting odds at +700 at Bet365.
With this in mind, our suggestion is for you to avoid placing any bet on the two top contenders since we don’t see any of them leaving Miami with the trophy.
Player to Keep an Eye – Ashleigh Barty
The former junior world no.1 – Ashleigh Barty – continues her rise to the top. Besides winning her first title on the WTA Tour in Kuala Lumpur, Barty also secured her career high ranking with the Australian currently ranked as world no.91. Due to her brilliant results in recent months, Ash received a wildcard to play the Miami Open main draw.
Barty starts her campaign in Florida against the former world no.5 – Eugenie Bouchard. Despite her tremendous success back in 2014, the last years haven’t been easy for Bouchard with the Canadian currently ranked outside the top 50. Adding to this, Eugenie holds a terrible 1 – 4 career record in Miami with her only victory taking place in 2013. With this in mind, our advice is for you to add the Australian to your betting picks to defeat Bouchard with Pinnacle offering -123 for Barty to secure a place in the Miami Open 2nd round.
