Join us while we analyze the main favorite spread for the WTA Australian Open Day 2. We’ll provide a detailed analysis on each match and the highest value tennis picks.

Victoria Azarenka (14) vs. Alison Van Uytvanck
The two-time Australian Open champion, Victoria Azarenka, will face Alison Van Uytvanck on her opening mach.

Van Uytvanck had a great season in 2015, breaking into top 50 for the first time on her career. Alison’s serve and forehand are by far her best shots, while her backhand is not so reliable. The Belgian likes to control the points with her forehand, hitting very often the runaround forehand.

It was very pleasant to see Azarenka back to her best level after several physical problems. The Belarussian started the year with the title in Brisbane, losing only an average of 3.4 games per match. Victoria’s counter punching skills are her biggest weapon, with the former no.1 hitting the ball extremely early at an outrageous pace

For the second consecutive year, Van Uytvanck will start her campaign at Melbourne against one of the main contenders, after losing last year to Serena by 0 – 6 4 – 6. The spread on Azarenka is extremely high at -8.0 (+106) on Pinnacle and it will very hard for her to cover it against this opponent. Despite not being able to present her best game in a regular basis, Alison can produce some outstanding tennis – like she did last year in the second set against Serena. The Belgian should give a good fight and we advise to avoid betting on Azarenka’s spread.

Shuai Zhang (q) vs. Simona Halep (2)
The 2nd seed, Simona Halep, will make her debut against the Chinese qualifier, Shuai Zhang.

Zhang will play the Australian Open main draw for the 5th time in six years, but she never reached the second round. After losing on Shenzhen’s second round against Agnieszka Radwanska by 1 – 6 5 – 7, Shuai got three victories on qualifying to book a place in this main draw.

As we referred in our tournament analysis, Halep has been struggling with an Achilles injury and playing in Sydney might not have been the best decision. The Romanian has a terrific baseline movement, however she was clearly far from her best in Sydney, with many ups and downs on her matches.

Simona said that she has been playing without pain, but her performances were far from impressive. Zhang is a great competitor, with strong groundstrokes and also a very good serve. Halep might cover her spread at -7.0 (+112) on Pinnacle, but we suggest not to bet on it. On the other hand, the Over seems a very interesting bet and is quite possible to see a match where Halep wins in two sets, with one of them being pretty close while the other is won by bigger margin (like it happened in Zhang’s loss against Radwanska in Shenzhen).

Anett Kontaveit vs. Garbine Muguruza (3)
Last year Wimbledon runner-up, Garbine Muguruza, will start her campaign at the Australian Open against Anett Kontaveit.

Kontaveit did an outstanding run last year at the US Open, where she reached the 4th round as a qualifier. Anett is an extremely dangerous player with her aggressive and flat groundstrokes, but is hard for her to keep a consistent level with such an aggressive strategy.

Like it happened to many other top players, Muguruza started the year with some physical problems. The Spaniard retired from Brisbane due to a foot injury and said that she’s still feeling some pain. Garbine is known for her powerful game, but also for struggling to maintain a high intensity during her matches.

We’ll have two similar players fighting for a place in 2nd round, both are very aggressive but also inconsistent. Garbine is without doubts the favorite, but due to her usual irregularity and recent physical problems, is hard to find value on her spread at -7.0 (+110) on Pinnacle. On the other hand, Kontaveit’s spread tennis odds seem a valuable investment opportunity. For that reason, we suggest adding the following split to your tennis picks: Kontaveit spread and Over.
