Barbora Strycova (16) vs. Andrea Petkovic

The last months haven’t been easy for Andrea Petkovic with the former world no.9 currently ranked outside the top 50. The German decided to compete in the WTA Hobart before this event, losing in the 2nd round against a player outside the top 100 – Veronica Cepede Royg. Even though Petkovic is always a tough opponent with her extremely solid baseline game, the German is clearly far from her best. Andrea’s numbers in recent years are a good example of that with an awful 1 – 16 record since March 2015 against top 20 opponents.

After reaching the Apia International Sydney semi-finals, Barbora Strycova secured her career high ranking this week as world no.16. Playing on the big stages clearly brings the best out of Strycova with the Czech winning 75.00% of the matches played on this event since 2015. Barbora started her campaign in the 2017 Australian Open edition with a terrific performance against Elizaveta Kulichkova, allowing only 5 games to the Russian.

These two players know each other well with Petkovic winning three of their previous five meetings. Despite Andrea’s lead on the h2h, Strycova won their last encounter in Indian Wells last season.

As we mentioned before, Barbora is going through a fantastic moment and it won’t be easy for anyone to beat her. Despite Petkovic’s fighting spirit, Strycova should be too good for the German. With this in mind, our recommendation is for you to take advantage of Barbora’s betting odds by placing a bet on the Czech to win this match.

Sara Errani vs. Ekaterina Makarova (30)

As you might remember from our WTA Australian Open Tournament Analysis, Ekaterina Makarova was the player to keep an eye on. The conditions in Melbourne clearly suit Makarova’s game style with the world no.34 holding a phenomenal 27 – 9 career record on this event. Due to her extremely aggressive game style, it’s not easy for Ekaterina to perform at a consistent level. Makarova’s first round match is a good example of that with the 2015 semi-finalist defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova by 6 – 0 4 – 6 6 – 1.

Even though Sara Errani is not a top player anymore, she’s still an incredible tough opponent. Known for her tremendous baseline consistency, Sara never gives anything for free to her opponents. This is already Errani’s 11th appearance in Melbourne with the Italian featuring her best result in 2011 when she reached the quarter-finals. Looking now to Sara’s campaign so far on this event, the former world no.5 defeated Risa Ozaki on her debut by 7 – 5 6 – 1.

This will be the 8th career meeting between these two players with Makarova leading on the h2h by 4 – 3.

As the h2h shows, things are quite close between these two players. Even though Ekaterina is currently at a higher level, Sara won’t go down without a fight. The sportsbooks present the lower price ever on Makarova against this opponent and although we believe in her victory, this should be a very close contest. With this in mind, we advise you to add the Over to your betting picks in a match where a third set should be required to find the winner.
