Main Favorite

The 2016 Rio Olympics gold medalist – Monica Puig – is the betting favorite to leave Acapulco with the trophy. The Puerto Rican arrives in Acapulco after two good campaigns in Doha and Dubai, losing only to former world No. 1s in Caroline Wozniacki and Angelique Kerber.

After losing in the quarterfinals back in 2015, Puig is trying to go a step further this year in Acapulco. She shouldn’t experience any major problems on her debut against 36-year-old Francesca Schiavone. In the following round Puig, might face Yanina Wickmayer, the player responsible for her elimination last season in this event. Wickmayer is clearly a tough match-up for Puig with the Belgian leading 3-0 all-time. Due to Wickmayer’s edge, it’s impossible for us to find any value on Puig’s betting odds to win this event at +550 at BetVictor. Therefore, our recommendation is not only to stay away from Monica’s outright but also to place a small stake against the Puerto Rican if she faces Wickmayer in the 2nd round.

Player To Fade

Considered by many to be one of the most talented players of her generation, former junior world No. 1 Kristina Mladenovic is finally living up to the expectations. Besides winning her first career title a few weeks ago in St. Petersburg, Mladenovic also returned to the Top 30, and it shouldn’t take long before we see her reaching a new career high ranking.

Despite her tremendous talent, the Frenchwoman remains a very inconsistent player. Her recent campaign in Dubai is a good example of that with Mladenovic losing to the world No. 78 Qiang Wang in two easy sets after a phenomenal 6-2, 6-4 victory over the world No. 3 Karolina Pliskova.

Looking now at Mladenovic's draw in Acapulco, she won’t have an easy task against the unpredictable Varvara Lepchenko. Known for her aggressive baseline game, the former world No. 19 has 6 victories over Top 10 opponents throughout her career. In addition to Varvara’s dangerous game style, she’s also left-handed, which is usually a problem for Mladenovic. The American is currently available at +222 at Pinnacle, a very interesting price due to her unpredictability and Mladenovic’s inconsistency.

Player To Keep An Eye On

Even though the last months haven’t been easy for Belinda Bencic with several physical problems, the Swiss is always a dangerous opponent due to her undeniable quality. The former world No. 7 desperately needs to win points since she’s currently outside the Top 100.

Bencic won’t have an easy debut in Acapulco against the top seed Lucic-Baroni. The Croat featured a remarkable run in Melbourne, losing only in the semifinals against Serena Williams. Despite her outstanding firepower, Lucic-Baroni is also famous for her inconsistency and it won’t be easy for her to perform once again at such a high level. Adding to this, Bencic is also a tough matchup for Lucic-Baroni with the Swiss leading 2-0 head-to-head. With this in mind, our suggestion is for you to add Bencic to your betting picks to win this first round match at -110 at William Hill.
