Two European giants in Germany and France will be taking part in their Round of 16 clashes today. Will they have any trouble advancing on to the next round or should we be backing the favorites with our soccer picks?

France vs. Nigeria
Tough to find much wrong with France's group stage campaign. They opened things up with a dominant 3-0 win over Honduras and then kept momentum high with a 5-2 trashing of Switzerland.

The French had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Ecuador but that was still enough to secure first place in Group E. Considering that means they avoid Argentina and instead play Nigeria in the first round of the knockout stages, it's a big deal that they finished on top.

It's a one-way contest when it comes to the soccer betting lines, as France will come in as a solid -250 favorite at most of the sportsbooks we've checked. A Nigeria win after 90 minutes is priced extremely high at anywhere from +750 to +850.

The Nigerians began their World Cup adventure with a 0-0 draw versus Iran, but then pulled off a great result in a 1-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina. Despite losing to Argentina, they still managed to advance out of Group F as the second seed.

Personnel wise, Nigeria's Michael Babatunde is out with a fractured wrist, while the team is hopeful to have Victor Moses available after he had to miss the Argentina match through injury. The French are likely to welcome Yohan Cabaye back from suspension and Mathieu Valbuena should return to the starting XI as well, but Mamadou Sakho is doubtful with a thigh problem.

We don't see any way France loses this match. To play it a little safe, we're going to take the French on the run-line, which means we get our money back if they only end up winning by one goal after 90 minutes.

The Nigerians just haven't inspired any confidence in the tournament, so we feel good about backing France with our sports betting picks.
Pick: France -1 (-157)

Germany vs. Algeria
The Germans stroll into the elimination stage as one of the top contenders to take home the coveted trophy.

Germany took care of business in a tough Group G, beating Portugal (4-0) and the USA (1-0) and drawing with Ghana 2-2. They advanced as the clear-cut number one seed with seven points out of a possible nine.

Today the Germans will try to get past a sneaky good Algeria outfit that's pretty much playing with house money now. They've exceeded expectations by making it through and now have nothing to lose against the giants.

The soccer odds are as you would expect them to be. Germany is clearly favored at -300, though some sites have lines as high as -400. Then there's Algeria, priced out at an insanely high underdog price of +1000.

If you've been following our World Cup coverage, you would know we're quite fond of these Algerians and what they've been able to accomplish. They've played attractive soccer and haven't been afraid to attack in numbers.

Unfortunately, we really believe they've met their match here in Germany. Perhaps Algeria would have been able to pull off an upset against a slightly weaker team, but they're going to be out-classed in this battle. Don't be surprised to see Thomas Muller get another goal or two today.

The Germans are on a mission and have looked the part of contenders. We'll be recommending that readers side with the favorites to win by two or more goals in order to get more value from your selections.
Pick: Germany -1.5 (-102)
