After a few days off, World Cup action resumes with the first two quarter-final matches, starting with Germany/France and ending with Colombia/Brazil. Which nations will move on to the semi-finals and therefore represent the best soccer betting value today?

France vs. Germany
It's a battle between two European giants to kick things off today, with Germany and France fighting it out for a spot in the semi-finals. If we look at the soccer betting lines, we see a dead heat, as both sides are available for the taking at +180 at a couple sites.

Looking at some of the other sportsbooks, we find the Germans favored by the smallest of margins. Both teams finished atop their respective groups and managed to survive in the Round of 16.

Germany was matched up with Algeria and was made to work extremely hard for a victory. It took two extra-time goals, scored by Andre Schurrle and Mesut Ozil, for the Germans to overcome the massive underdogs in an exciting 2-1 win.

As for France, they had an easier time in their first taste of the knockout rounds, beating the uninspiring Nigerians 2-0 thanks to a Paul Pogba header and an own goal in stoppage time. The French had to be patient throughout against a well-organized defense, but eventually they found their way through and were deserved winners.

This is sure to be a fantastic spectacle of soccer, featuring two of the most talented teams pulling out all of the stops to keep the dream alive. Tensions will be high and we'll have to see who handles the pressure best.

When placing our sports picks though, we believe the value lies with Germany. They're the more experienced team – should they win today they'll have made the semi-finals in four straight World Cups – and know what it takes to get a victory on this grandest of stages. We like the Germans to advance.

Brazil vs. Colombia
And how about this for a follow-up act? What an atmosphere it should be when Brazil and Colombia battle it out for at least 90 minutes with a coveted spot in the final four on the line!

Unlike the first quarter-final of the day, there's a clear favorite in the sports betting odds and that would be the Brazilians, who are quoted in the -125 to -135 range to win outright in regulation. A Colombia victory is listed at approximately +400.

Brazil has used their significant crowd backing (and the magic of Neymar) to make the quarters, though their Round of 16 win over Chile was far from straightforward. The Brazilians had to hold their nerve in the penalty shootout to finally secure advancement.

It's been a terrific tournament for Colombia so far. James Rodriguez has emerged as one of the stars of the World Cup and was instrumental in his country's fairly comfortable 2-0 win over Uruguay in the last round.

The intensity of today's match, however, is going to be on a different level. The hosts will have the advantage of having the crowd behind them, but let's not forget Colombia has had tremendous support throughout this tournament as well.

There doesn't seem to be much value in picking a side here, though if push comes to shove we would recommend backing the underdog Colombians at a nice price.

Instead we like the look of the 'over,' as we wouldn't be surprised to see a frenzied back-and-forth match with plenty of goalscoring opportunities, especially if there happens to be an early goal. With so many playmakers out on that pitch, we believe the over has a great chance of hitting.
