Italy’s Path to the Quarterfinal

Italy won group C behind a 2-0-1 record and a five-goal differential. Australia, who matched the Italians with a 2-0-1 record, finished second because of a lesser goal differential. It was a relatively tough group that included the Aussies, Brazil and underdogs Jamaica.

The Italians opened their World Cup bid brightly, beating Australia 2-1. They dismissed Jamaica 5-0 in the second round, but lost 1-0 to Brazil in the final lap. Overall, they scored seven goals and conceded two. In the R16, Italy beat China 2-0 to reach the last eight.

Netherland’s Path to the Quarterfinal

Netherlands topped group E with a perfect 3-0-0 record that included scoring six goals and conceding two goals. The Dutch were contained in the same section as tournament contenders Canada and hopefuls New Zealand and Cameroon. The Dutch scored six goals and conceded only two goals in group play.

Netherlands began their bid with a 1-0 victory over New Zealand. They went on to beat Cameroon 3-1 in round 2, and edged Canada 2-1 in the final round of group play. In the R16, the Dutch women defeated a very resilient and capable Japan 2-1.

Japan were champions in 2011 and runners-up in 2015, making this a very significant victory that should propel them into the final eight with measured confidence. Heck, the Dutch will be a bit relieved, too. The Dutch started brightly against Japan, but the former champions were settling into the game nicely in the second half, their passing game and superior technical skills were finally dominating and giving the Dutch all sorts of fits.

To Win Outright

Italy are the tournament longshots to win priced at +2000, a mark they share with Sweden. The Dutch, however, are priced at +900. They are fifth overall favourites, but, based on their play thus far in the tournament, in some betting circles they emerge as the sleeper soccer pick.

Soccer Betting Verdict

The Dutch enter this match as the favourites, even if they are priced just above EVEN money. In Italy, the decided underdogs at +260, they’ll face a slightly lesser opponent than they did in Japan. However, nothing can be taken for granted. Italy may well fancy their chances for the upset.

The Italians have strength and play solidly on both sides of the ball. If there were a downside, they have the fewest shots on goal of all the teams going into the last eight. That could spell trouble against a Dutch side that is has size, strength and great technique when they have the ball.
