Semi-final Look Back Sweden and England are set to determine third place honours at the 2019 Women’s World Cup. Small consolation after falling short in the semi-finals, but, still something to be proud of in what has been a superb tournament in France. England was defeated by the USA in the first of the highly anticipated final four matches on Tuesday. Although the Lionesses entered the match as the distinct underdogs, they had room for optimism. They’d played a fantastic tournament and Ellen White’s five goals (ahead of the semis) had her in contention for the golden boot.
England started brightly, and despite falling behind 0-1 early to the USA they kept pressing. Then, leading scorer, Ellen White, levelled for England through a well guided flicked finish in the first half. England was back in it.
However, Alex Morgan headed the USA back in front just after the thirty-minute mark, dashing hopes ruthlessly. In the second half, it was more pulsating action. The Lionesses thought they levelled the score early on, but Ellen White was ruled offside by VAR. After that the wheels seemed to come undone. The Lionesses missed a prime opportunity to level when Captain Steph Houghton botched a penalty shot, and then a red card saw them down to ten players. USA held on to the close victory and survived the scare.
Sweden, meanwhile, lost a nail bitter against Netherlands 0-1 in the second semi-final on Wednesday night. The match went into extra time after they settled on a scoreless draw in 90 minutes. It was a valiant effort by the Scandinavian hopefuls, but it fell just short of the mark as Netherlands scored the crucial winning goal to advance into the finals.
Sweden vs. England Third Place Playoff Odds and Tips It’s easy to see why England enter this matchup as the favourites. They pushed the best team in the women’s game to the brink, and created chances to mastermind the upset. A combination of bad luck and scrappy play towards the end was their major undoing. It really was anybody’s game to win for a good stretch of the 90 minutes.
As such, England are worthy favourites priced at -138 with Bet365 to clinch the victory and finish their World Cup campaign on a winning note. Ellen White, who leads the Lionesses with six goals, is also a worthy bet to score again at the World Cup. She’s priced at +300 to score first or last and at -120 to score anytime.
Sweden will not be pushovers despite their underdog status. Not sure if their +375 soccer odds are a fair reflection of their quality; they do seem rather large, influenced, perhaps, by the lack of scoring in their semi-final. However, Netherlands are the reigning European champions – so it was always going to be a tough ask in the final four for Sweden.
England should prove similarly tough. England grabbed the bronze medal in the 2015 World Cup when they defeated Germany, and after the heartbreak of the semis, they’re motivated to clinch the bronze again, even if it is small consolation for what was a brilliant showing at the tournament.
This doesn’t mean the Swedes are feeling any less heartbroken. After all, they too were one win away from the finals. In a match where the pressure will be slightly different, they’ll certainly fancy their chances for the bronze medal too, despite the soccer odds.
In summary, this could be a close game and England are by no means guaranteed the win. While we’re shading England to win at -138 on our soccer picks, perhaps the smarter bet is to take the OVER 2.5 at -135. Both teams were doing well offensively before the semis, averaging around 2.5 goals combined.
