World No. 1 Iga Swiatek is the overwhelming favorite in the season’s first Grand Slam. Read on for our women's Australian Open tennis odds and picks. (WTA rankings as of Saturday, Jan. 14).

Four of the last five winners of the Australian Open will not have a chance for repeat success this season. Caroline Wozniacki (2018 winner) and Ashleigh Barty (2022 winner) have both retired, and two-time winner Naomi Osaka (2019, 2021) is out after announcing she is pregnant. That leaves Sofia Kenin as the lone winner in this draw from the previous five years, but she is considered an afterthought with +20000 odds.

All women are seemingly chasing Swiatek, who went 68-9 in 2022, including a 37-match winning streak, which was the longest of the 21st century. Swiatek won two of the four majors last year (French Open and US Open). Still, the previous eight Grand Slams have been won by six different women, which should give optimism to everyone looking up at the world No. 1.

Who Will Win the 2023 Women’s Australian Open?

Jessica Pegula (+1200 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

It is hard to ignore Swiatek’s dominance, as she won 22 sets 6-0 in 2022 (the most since Serena Williams in 2013) and had 48 straight-set victories. In addition, she had won six consecutive tournaments entering Wimbledon. However, we have seen great parity in the women’s game, and pre-tournament odds as low as +240 are hard to get excited about.

Thus, Jessica Pegula is our pick at DraftKings, which offers a much more enticing +1200 price than the +1000 odds elsewhere. Pegula has skyrocketed up the WTA rankings after securing her most prestigious singles title with her win at Guadalajara. At that tournament, she beat previous Grand Slam winners in four consecutive matches (Victoria Azarenka, Sloane Stephens, Bianca Andreescu, and Elena Rybakina) before an easy straight-set victory over Maria Sakkari in the final. However, her biggest individual win came in the semifinals of the United Cup, as she beat Swiatek, whom she lost to in the two tournaments leading up to Guadalajara (semifinal and quarterfinal appearances). 

Pegula has made back-to-back quarterfinal appearances at the Australian Open. Combined with playing the best tennis of her career, she has us liking her chances for a significant breakthrough in 2023.

Ons Jabeur (+1400 via BetMGM) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Jabeur is in the same quarter as Aryna Sabalenka, who has the second-best pre-tournament odds after her win in Adelaide. However, we prefer to back Jabeur at +1400 odds via BetMGM compared to Sabalenka’s (+700) odds, as she knows how to raise her game on the biggest stages. Jabeur made the finals in her previous two Grand Slams. While Sabalenka could be a tricky quarterfinal opponent, the Belarusian has yet to make it past the fourth round at the Australian Open and has been plagued by service issues in the past.

Maria Sakkari (+3400 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐

The sixth-seeded Sakkari directly opposes our Pegula bet, with them being in the same quarter. However, with the Greek as low as +2000 via DraftKings, we are compelled to take a stab with her at +3400 via FanDuel for value in case she is the one to advance to the semifinals. Sakkari has made two fourth-round appearances at the Australian Open and made the semifinal or better in her previous three tournaments.
