Saturday's WNBA Double Feature With Lots Of First Half Value

New York Liberty at Minnesota Lynx

The New York Liberty have a 1-0 series lead over the Lynx as they head to Minnesota for their second matchup of the season. However, the Lynx are solid favorites for multiple reasons and one of them is a very WNBA specific reason.

New York breakout player Amanda Zahui B is headed back to Europe to play and she will be out indefinitely for the Liberty. With their injuries and limited depth, this is a huge blow. Zahui B had scored double figures in three of the Liberty’s last four games, including dropping a career-best 37 points against the Aces last weekend.

This is a huge problem for a Liberty team on the road. Despite the Lynx losing their last four in a row, I think that may actually help motivate them to get off to a quick start against an inferior team. Outside of Tina Charles, who is still a tough matchup for the Lynx, the Liberty don’t have a lot of offense.

This has been evident early in games on the road. So far on the road this season, the Liberty have a measly 57.4 offensive rating in the first quarter and 81.2 in the first half. These are ranked last and second to last among all 12 teams.

Even though the Lynx have struggled and have dropped their first meeting with the Liberty, I think being at home will change things. Minnesota has played six home games so far this season and they own an 84.4 defensive rating, which is the best home mark among all 12 teams.

My Pick: Lynx 1Q and 1H ATS

Dallas Wings at Las Vegas Aces

One theme for the Dallas Wings this season has been a lack of scoring. It isn’t surprising. After trading away one of the league’s best offensive weapons in Liz Cambage, the Wings have an offensive rating of just 90.9 through their first seven games.

Now they have to head into Cambage’s new home and that may not be easy. The Aces have been one of the best defensive teams in the league this season and they are quickly improving with the devastating frontcourt of A’ja Wilson and Cambage.

This should be more evident in the early stages of the game. The Aces are liable to get up to an early lead only to have the Wings stage a comeback late in the game and cover.

With the emotion of Cambage facing her old team and the analytics favoring the Aces early, a first quarter wager is the way to go here.

Dallas has a 101.8 defensive rating in the first quarters of their road games this season. On the other side, the Aces are averaging 114.1 points per 100 possessions in the first quarters of their four home games, while allowing only 92.5 per 100 possessions.

My Pick: Aces 1Q ATS
