Kirsten Stewart as Princess Diana Not An Obvious Choice
The announcement of American actress, Kirsten Stewart, signing on to play Princess Diana was met with mixed reviews. Skepticism prevailed among some film critics and fans of the royals. Others were simply outraged.
It’s fair to say, Stewart wasn’t the obvious choice: an American depicting a British royal is a risky prospect when there is a plethora of noteworthy actresses from the UK that may have been more fitting for the role.
Stewart, who is Hollywood through-and-through, is best known for her work as Bella Swan in the Twilight series of films. Most recently, she has taken part in unconventional, independent films.
Pablo Larraín defended his decision to cast Stewart for the role, saying “Kristen is one of the great actors around today.” Larraín went on to add that Stewart had that special “je ne sais quoi” that is a mass draw. “To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery,” said Larrain. “I think she’s going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature.”
Betting on Prince Charles
Surely, a movie depicting the British royal family should have at least one token British actor in one of the lead roles. As such, Zac Efron can be stricken out of hand in the entertainment betting market for the movie – color the world shocked (and yours truly gobsmacked) if Efron gets the nod. Same goes for Timothee Chalamet (+2200), who is both American and merely 24 years of age.
Benedict Cumberbatch (-160) is a stellar British actor with a CBE and a big-name star that is quite rightly the favorite for the role. He’s older than Kirsten Stewart, which would strike the right visual chord on screen, and he can come across a bit “posh” too, which is de rigueur for a film of this subject matter and magnitude.
Tom Hiddleston (+350) is another English actor, who has some experience playing royals: Hiddleston appeared as King Henry V in the BBC series “Henry V”. He also portrayed Prince Hal opposite Jeremy Irons as Henry IV in the Shakespeare adaptation of “Henry IV” Part 1 and Part 2. He’s in the right age group for the film as well.
Tom Holland (+700) is an English actor, but at merely 24 years of age, he would be a longshot choice for the role of Prince Charles, who was 12 years older than Diana. It would take a lot of makeup to age him to look older than Stewart, who is 30-years old. It simply makes little sense to cast a younger actor to play Prince Charles.
Tom Hardy (+1500) is an English actor but with a resume that involves a lot of gripping, action movies – such as “The Revenant”, for which he received an Oscar nomination – he may not be an obvious choice. That said, he was awarded a CBE for services to drama by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace two years ago. As such, he may well be an underdog worth considering, if only for his box-office draw.
Robert Pattison (+2500) is an English actor, who co-stared alongside Kirsten Steward in the Twilight Series of films and was romantically involved with Stewart for a period of time. He has the pedigree to be cast as Prince Charles, but to cast the Twilight co-stars together could be detrimental to the movie; not least because Pattison purportedly swore on a stack of bibles to stay away from Stewart.
The Spencer Movie Key Notes
The new Princes Diana movie is to be directed and produced by Pablo Larrain, while “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight is penning the script. The story takes place over three days inside the royal family’s Sandringham estate in England, and its primary focus is purportedly on Princess Dian’s decision to divorce Prince Charles. Production is slated to begin in 2021 but no release date as yet has been announced.
