Black is back in Hollywood, or should I say it is taking center stage, as six African-American actors were nominated this year versus none the last two years. Some may call it white guilt while others call it a long time coming. Either way, there is no denying that the spotlight is shining brightly on not only the actors but the voters as well. The Hollywood liberal elite may be inclined to give one of its top awards to the only black actor in this impressive group. If so, it would be the third Oscar on the mantle for Denzel Washington with one as Best Supporting Actor in Glory (1989) and Best Actor for his performance in Training Day (2001).
Fences is heavy on content and emotional gravitas as opposed to the lighthearted and whimsical La La Land which gives Denzel a big leg up on Gosling and to a lesser extent Mortensen. Though Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea and Andrew Garfield in Hacksaw Ridge have also been tasked with emotionally charged roles, it is the talented Mr. Washington who is my choice at Oscar Odds of +120 at BetOnline to include in my Oscar picks for this Sunday night.Swinger’s Academy Award Pick: Denzel Washington +120Best Line Offered: at BetOnline
