Match day 4 served up a whole slew of shocking upsets that sent seismic shockwaves through betting markets. We look at the results & examine what impact they might have had on the EPL Odds board.
Man City Grow From Strength To Strength
Manuel Pellegrini and his Citizens continue to grow from strength to strength in EPL betting markets. Behind a stellar 4-0-0 start to the season, Manchester City are sat lotus atop the lolling Premier League hill with 12 points, three points clear of second-placed Crystal Palace (not the club most would have had in second at this stage of the season, obviously, but they reach such lofty heights after masterminding a shocking 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge in week 4 EPL betting. Go figure.
That result not only sent seismic shockwaves through soccer betting circles and thrust the Special One into a right foul mood, but it also sent his precious Blues back down into the bottom half of the table. Down to 13th place behind a subpar 1-1-2 record and 4 points after spending just one week of the new season in top-half pastures, Chelsea are close to matching their losses for the whole of last season and it’s just early days yet. (Last season, they lost just three games).
On the surface, Jose Mourinho remains unfazed by his team’s early struggles, believing there’s lots of time to turn things around. However, odds makers don’t appear to be of a similar mind as Chelsea’s odds to win the title for a second straight season have rocketed up to +550 at Bet365 and as high as +600 at other sportsbooks including Ladbrokes for instance, almost doubling from last week’s +333 futures odds or thereabouts.
This significant jump in price is down to several things. The obvious: form is a concern as Chelsea don’t seem to be in sync at all. Another is the upcoming schedule: Chelsea take on Everton at the weekend in week 5 of EPL before kicking off their Champions League bid against Maccabi Tel Aviv on Wednesday. Following that they have a pivotal clash against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in week 6 EPL betting before going on to Walsall for League Cup action on Tuesday and rounding out the month of September with a date against Newcastle United at St. James Park and a date with Porto two days later in Portugal. Think you Chelsea can salvage their title bid? Eight points behind Man City and a treacherous month of September ahead? It’s going to be quite the challenge to take maximum points across several competitions, even by their lofty standards.
Man City’s odds have firmed up across various sports betting platforms. They are now found trading anywhere between -200 to -250 soccer odds, depending on your sportsbook of choice. That price isn’t in danger of slipping too much if they continue their sublime form. Next up is a date with high-flying Crystal Palace in week 5 of EPL betting followed by a shockingly sputtering Juventus (0-0-2 on the Serie A season) in midweek Champions League action and a date with Slavan Bilic’s highly-entertaining West Ham United in week 6 EPL betting, both at the Etihad. Things lighten up slightly with a struggling Sunderland and Tottenham in back-to-back EPL matches to round out their domestic commitments in the month of September. A rather fortuitous turn of the EPL schedule, right before a road trip to Borussia M’gladbach in Champions League match day 2. (It’s worth noting that Borussia M’gladbach have started the season behind three straight losses and currently prop up the Bundesliga table). Looking at Man City’s schedule over the next 30 days, they do appear primed for a good run of form and maintaining their stranglehold on the EPL title race, don’t they?
In other results, Arsenal extended their undefeated form to three games with a win over Newcastle United, while both Manchester United and Liverpool slip up in week 4 EPL betting. Man United suffered a 2-1 defeat to Swansea City on the road while Liverpool were embarrassed 3-0 at Anfield Stadium. Both have seen their soccer odds swell in EPL betting markets since last week.
Man United were trading at +1000 ahead of week 4 at Bet365. They are now up to +1400 to win the title. Liverpool’s soccer odds have rocketed out of control from +2200 (last week) to +5000. Arsenal, meanwhile, have seen their soccer odds go both ways depending on your sportsbook of choice. Last week they were at +550 at Bet365 and this week they moved up slightly to +600. Some sportsbooks are offering them as low as +450 though.
So there you have it. Some big moves on the Premier League odds board and the season barely four weeks old.
