Saturday night December 19th features a lightweight championship clash between Rafael dos Anjos & Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone but there are other matches as well that we will look to cash in our UFC picks.

Donald Cerrone (28-6, 5 KO’s, 15 Subs) vs. Rafael dos Anjos (24-7, 4 KO’s, 8 Subs)
This is the fight everyone wants to see. Donald Cerrone is one of the most active fighters in all of MMA and has earned this title shot due not only to his string of eight consecutive victories but by fighting wherever and whenever Dana White summons him. Cerrone has evolved from strictly a mat tactician to a fighter who is now a legitimate knockout threat. Consider that the Cowboy had only two KO’s to his credit before this latest winning streak which began in November of 2013, submitting Evan Dunham in the second round of their scheduled three round battle, and has knocked out three of his latest eight opponents for a total of five in his career. All those knockouts came courtesy of a head kick which signals that his devastating Muay Thai has morphed from power kicks to the legs to power kicks to the head. He has seamlessly been able to change levels with his kicking and it has made a noticeable impact on his performance.

Rafael dos Anjos was the last man to defeat Cerrone and it occurred well before he was crowned king of the lightweights with his shocking victory over Anthony Pettis in March of this year via unanimous decision. In August of ’13 dos Anjos and Cerrone locked up in a three round tussle that went to the scorecards and the verdict was unanimous, dos Anjos had won the day and notched another bullet on his ever widening holster.

But that was then and this is now. Both fighters are more complete and polished than they were just a few years ago and the UFC odds makers have given me too much betting value on the Cowboy to ignore. This is a coin flip in my opinion therefore getting all this plus money means Cerrone will definitely be included in my UFC picks.

UFC Pick: Play Donald Cerrone

Alistair Overeem (39-14, 16 KO’s, 9 Subs) vs. Junior dos Santos (17-3, 12 KO’s 2 Subs)
Alistair Overeem has the physical makeup of a Greek god – or Dutch god as the case may be – and has tremendous tools. His problem has always been cardio and the inability to weather a storm. He has been KO’ed in nine of his 14 losses and much of that is due to sheer exhaustion. Junior dos Santos does not suffer from such maladies. The former UFC heavyweight champion is formidable in every aspect of his game and he will not quit. Dos Santos has been knocked out only once in his storied career which came courtesy of Cain Velazquez in their rematch for the heavyweight title. This will be fun to watch but don’t blink because Overeem will be out before you know it and JDS will make his latest case for another title shot.

UFC Pick: Play dos Santos

Michael Johnson (16-9, 7 KO’s, 2 Subs) vs. Nate Diaz (20-10, 4 KO’s, 14 Subs)
In the interest of full disclosure I am not a fan of Nate Diaz or for that matter his brother Nick. If his “screw you” attitude doesn’t warm the cockles of your heart then maybe it’s his unwillingness to cut weight in his last fight a little over a year ago when he suffered a lopsided decision loss to Rafael dos Anjos. But the man is talented and I am still scratching my head why Michael Johnson, two inches shorter with a four inch reach disadvantage, is such a heavy favorite?

Johnson has nine losses on his record with six by submission and if it is one thing Nate Diaz does well is hit the mat and close the deal. He has 14 submissions on his record and though he is prone to mental lapses the UFC Odds on this one are just too good to pass up.

UFC Pick: Play Nick Diaz
Best Line Offered: +375 at 5Dimes
