Cannonier is not a seasoned enough striker to take out a master like Silva. Anderson Silva may be older but he still has enough gas in the tank to beat Cannonier.

In December of 2016 Cannonier was fighting Ion Cutelaba at heavyweight! Then he dropped down to 205 and went 3-1 before dropping yet another weight class to 185 and demolishing David Branch. Cannonier is most known for one of the most interesting cage entrances in UFC history.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Yo we need to talk about Jared Cannonier's entrance real quick 😂🐕 #UFC230 pic.twitter.com/2WCHMwVIXz
— Dovy🔌 (@DovySimuMMA) November 4, 2018
\n\n"}[/]

Cannonier is not a heavyweight and understood that after facing those monsters, but he was able to survive their shots showing off an impressive chin. At 205 it became apparent that while he was undersized he was competitive. Cannonier took Jan Blachowicz to a 5 round decision and also fought with Glover Teixeira to a 3 round decision showing that he can dip his toe in the top 10 at 205. It wasn't until he ran into the freight train that is Dominick Reyes that it became painfully obvious that he would not touch gold at 205. After that loss, Cannonier dropped to 185 and put a beating on David Branch that has him standing as the favorite in his fight against Silva. We need to thank the bookies for misunderstanding this situation and giving us underdog money on the greatest fighter of all time.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": ""}[/]

Anderson “The Spider” Silva is 44 years old and just had a 3 round battle with now interim champion Israel Adesanya. While he did not win that fight and it was unanimous for Adesanya it was clear that Anderson is still dangerous and even having slowed down he is still an incredibly talented striker. Anderson’s record is not as bad as it may appear at a glance. After the two losses to Weidman he had a banned substance that overturned his win over Nick Diaz to a no contest. He returned against Michael Bisping where he damn near killed the brit in round 1. Bisping dug deep and came back to barely squeeze out rounds 2 and 3 for a decision win that many people still believe that Silva won. It was an extremely close fight.

After Bisping, Silva faced Daniel Cormier due to an opponent drop and a late replacement situation where he again went all 3 rounds against the natural heavyweight and champ. You can draw a line through the DC loss and the Bisping fight could have been a R1 finish. Silva is not as old and slow as people make him out to be. On top of that, his opponent Cannonier’s only notable win is against a version of Branch who is only ever prepared to fight one round. Cannonier has crushing power however he is nowhere near the level of striker it will take to compete with Anderson Silva. Even an aged Silva will likely have a speed advantage over Cannonier and I do not expect Cannonier to be able to repeatedly take down and hold down Anderson Silva. Do not forget that we are also in Brazil for this card, so if the fight is close Silva will get a little bit of home cooking. The pick is Anderson Silva.
