Sweden’s greatest MMA import, Alexander Gustafsson, will take on Glover Teixeira in Stockholm at UFC Fight Night on May 28. The UFC odds are steaming toward the Scandinavian favorite.

Alexander Gustafsson is this close to breaking through. He’s fought twice for the UFC Light Heavyweight championship, losing narrow decisions to Jon Jones (-1000) in 2013 and Daniel Cormier (-315) two years ago. Now Gustafsson is knocking on the door again; he’s the featured attraction for UFC Fight Night 109, taking place on Sunday, May 28, in Stockholm – home turf for Gustafsson, and a difficult situation for his opponent, Glover Teixeira.

This match was supposed to take place two years ago at Fight Night 69 in Berlin, but Gustafsson had to pull out because of injury. Will that delay cost him? The betting market doesn’t think so; Gustafsson opened at -193 on our UFC odds board, and he’s already up to -275 as we go to press. But we haven’t seen much of The Mauler since his loss to Cormier. Teixeira’s another story.

Use It Or Lose It

Gustafsson paid the price in his title fight with Cormier. The split-decision loss was painful enough, but Gustafsson took so much punishment he was put on medical suspension for six months. It wasn’t until September 2016 that Gustafsson stepped back in the Octagon to face Jan Blachowicz (+350) at Fight Night 93. Not his best fight, but the big Swede ground his way to a unanimous decision. He hasn’t fought since.

Teixeira, meanwhile, has graced the Octagon four times in that span, winning three of those matches – the only loss was that flash knockout at the hands of Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (-295). The Brazilian veteran shook it off and put away Jared Cannonier (+170) without too much trouble in his next fight at UFC 208 back in February.

This looks like one of those situations where the favorite should certainly win, but the underdog belongs in our UFC picks at these odds. Appearing in front of his home fans isn’t a guarantee that Gustafsson will win; he was another first-round victim of Johnson (+215) and his heavy hands when they fought in Stockholm in early 2015. Does he still have the köttbullar to deal with the hard-hitting Teixeira (15 KOs in 26 victories) and earn a third crack at the Light Heavyweight title? We shall see.
