The 2017 CFL regular season got underway last week, and the early results leaned heavily towards the underdogs with all four teams getting points covering against the spread. Looking ahead to this week’s betting action, I have come up with two more underdogs paying off in my CFL parlay pick.

The Lions closed as 4-point home favorites against Edmonton last week, but a furious fourth-quarter rally fell three points short in a 30-27 loss. The big take away from that game was BC’s ability to move the ball on the Eskimos through the air with Jonathon Jennings at quarterback and on the ground with Jeremiah Johnson. The rust was pretty evident in this attack for the first three quarters of Week 1’s loss, but I would not count on such a slow start Friday night.

Toronto closed as a 3.5-point home underdog in Sunday’s opener against Hamilton and veteran quarterback Ricky Ray put on an aerial display of his own with 506 yards passing while completing close to 80 percent of his 41 throws. The Argonauts did struggle to move the ball on the ground with a total of just 39 rushing yards. The biggest concern for Toronto at home this Friday is a defense that allowed an average of 31.6 points per game last season. BC’s offense is going to present a much tougher test to stop in this matchup than the Tiger-Cats did last week.

  • The Lions have gone 5-1 ATS in their last six games following a SU loss and the total has gone OVER in four of their last five games as underdogs on the road.
  • The Argonauts are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games following a SU win and the total has stayed UNDER in six of their last eight games coming off a SU win.
  • BC has a 5-1 edge ATS in its last six road games against the Argonauts and the total has stayed UNDER in 13 of the last 16 meetings in Toronto.

BC’s slow start out of the gate last week against Edmonton created too big of hole to climb out of. As slight road underdogs, I think the Lions take full advantage of a much better start to get the SU win.

Montreal Alouettes At Edmonton Eskimos (-8.5, 52)

Montreal was able to grind out a 17-16 victory at home against Saskatchewan to start the new season on a positive note, but it could not cover the closing spread as a 7-point favorite. Darian Durant put the ball up 31 times and completed 20 passes for 233 yards, including scoring strikes to BJ Cunningham and Ernest Jackson. More impressive was the play of the Alouettes’ defense after finishing last season ranked second in the CFL in points allowed (23.1).

The Eskimos rolled up 30 points and 420 yards of total offense in that win against BC, but they did almost blow a 20-11 lead heading into the fourth quarter of that game. Mike Reilly picked up where he left off last season as the league leader in passing with 315 yards through the air against the Lions’ defensive secondary, but it is going to be a challenge to put up those kinds of numbers this Friday against a much tighter defense across the board.

  • The Alouettes have covered the spread in their last four games as underdogs on the road and the total has gone OVER in four of their last five games following a SU win
  • The Eskimos have failed to cover in six of their last eight home games as favorites and the total has gone OVER in 10 of their last 14 games played at home.
  • Montreal is 0-6 both SU and ATS in the last six meetings overall and the total has gone OVER in six of the last seven meetings in Edmonton.

Montreal has had its issues in this interdivision matchup over the past three seasons, but this time around I like its chances to cover with the 8.5 points on the strength of a shutdown defense that should be able to keep things close.
