Petra Kvitova (4) vs Angelique Kerber (6)
Petra Kvitova has never been a very consistent player, adding to her asthma problems the Czech revealed last summer that she has been struggling with mononucleosis. Despite those problems, Petra won WTA New Heaven and reached US Open quarterfinals.
Before this event, Kvitova had two early losses in Wuhan and Beijing but things might be different this week in Singapore. The Indoor game conditions suit Petra’s powerful tennis and she can make huge damage on these courts. Although the courts aren’t the fastest on tour, the conditions are still pretty good for the Czech.
As we said in our tournament preview, Angelique Kerber has a terrible career record on this event with just one victory in six matches. Kerber is one of the toughest competitors on tour, returning every shot and not giving anything free to her opponents. However, there are no real weapons on Angelique’s tennis, which gives too many chances for her opponents to control the points.
If Kerber’s defensive style is enough against lower level players who can’t keep a consistent level, against the top players her game seems too short.
This will be the 7th meeting between them with Kvitova leading 4 – 2 on h2h. The last two meetings were on Indoor with Petra emerging victorious in both. The previous contests were all extremely close with five of previous six meetings being decided in a third set.
Kerber will put a lot of fight as always, but this match is clearly on Petra’s racket. The Czech can make much more damage with her tennis and playing on Indoor she becomes even more dangerous.
