At the age of 38, Tommy Haas is giving another shot to his professional tennis career. Tommy missed the entire season of 2016 due to a shoulder injury, which makes this his first appearance since October 2015. This is not Haas’ first return to competition, back in 2011 Tommy featured a remarkable comeback, reaching the top 15 just one year later. Playing in Melbourne is always special for Haas with the former world no.2 reaching the semi-finals in three different occasions.

Whenever Benoit Paire steps on court everything can happen. Known for his phenomenal two-handed backhand, Paire is also famous for his erratic forehand and inability to maintain a consistent level. Benoit’s recent results in Melbourne are a good example of that with the French losing in the opening round last year against the world no.339 – Noah Rubin. Looking now to Paire’s previous 47 matches on Grand Slam main draws, only 9 of those ended with a straight sets victory from the French.

This will be the first career meeting between these two players with many things separating them currently. Even though Paire is the undeniable favorite to win the match, Haas won’t go down without a fight. The German was always a tremendous fighter and he can be very dangerous in a match where he has nothing to lose. Due to Benoit’s inconsistency and Tommy’s mentality, our recommendation is for you to add Haas’ set handicap to your betting picks as the highest value play for this encounter.

 Jordan Thompson vs. João Sousa

After a tremendous success on the Challenger Tour throughout 2016 with four titles, Jordan Thompson is looking to take the next step this year. The Australian started his campaign in 2017 with a terrific performance in Brisbane, losing only in the quarter-finals against Kei Nishikori. Thompson also featured his best career victory on that event, defeating the former world no.3 – David Ferrer – in the 2nd round. Even though Jordan can play at a very good level, it’s not easy for him to do that in a consistent basis and his 1 – 6 record on Grand Slam events is a good example of that.

João Sousa couldn’t ask for a better start of year with the Portuguese reaching his 8th career final in Auckland. Known for his terrific return to serve, Sousa presented a very high level on serve in Auckland, winning 85.20% of his service games throughout the week. João is always a very solid player on Grand Slam events with an outstanding 16 – 5 record when priced as favorite on Major events. In 2016, Sousa made it into the 3rd round in Melbourne, Wimbledon and also at the US Open.

These two players will face each other for the second time in their career with Sousa winning their previous encounter two years ago at this same event by 6 – 4 7 – 6 6 – 4.

Despite Thompson’s improvements in recent months, it won’t be easy for him to overcome João’s consistent baseline game. Sousa played at an outstanding level in Auckland with his forehand creating many problems to his opponents. The Portuguese should be too strong once again and for that reason, we advise you to take advantage of Sousa’s betting odds on this match.

Free Tennis Pick: João Sousa ML (-149)
