Both the Seattle Mariners and the Houston Astros come in to tonight's game with playoff hopes and winning records. These teams had productive first halves but they have more work ahead of them if they plan on making the postseason.

Today we're going to look at the total in this matchup as it looks to me like odds makers are a little off on the number.

The MLB odds have come out with a total of 8 for this matchup like at Pinnacle Sports -105. For my MLB pick I'm going to back under the total as both of the starting pitchers are a bit better than their numbers and this is a good spot to catch them the first game out of the break. This should be more of a pitcher's duel than people anticipate.

Houston Astros
Doug Fister gets the start for Houston and comes in with a 3.55 ERA and 1.24 whip while the Astros are averaging 4.51 runs per game which ranks 15th in the major leagues. Fister has already faced Seattle twice this season giving up his share of runs allowing six earned in just over 12 innings pitched against them. However, he has been solid on the road with a 3.21 ERA and out of his last 10 starts he is only got knocked around a touch with a rough outing against the White Sox allowing five earned in four innings.

Except for that start he has been really good and is coming into this game with a bit of momentum allowing just two earned off of three hits in eight innings against Oakland. As well, Houston has one of the better relief staffs in baseball with a 3.20 ERA.

At the plate the Astros have been hot and cold this season and for the most part rank in the middle of the league in those categories. They rank 15th in runs per game as mentioned, doubles, triples, and slugging. They also have an interesting disparity between the walks and strikeouts where they rank third in walks but 29th in strikeouts. On top of all the statistics is the fact that the Astros rank last in the American League hitting just .226 against left-handers.

Seattle Mariners
James Paxton takes the mound for Seattle and comes in with a 3.91 ERA and 1.59 whip with Seattle averaging 4.89 runs per game which ranks ninth in the major leagues. The Mariners for the most part have been one of the better hitting teams in the American League this first half of the season. They rank second in the major leagues in home runs per game and seventh in OPS with some good pop throughout the lineup. Still, although they might do a little bit of damage against Fister he should be able to keep the damage to a minimum.

Paxton is a bit better than his numbers and like Fister should be coming into this game with a lot of confidence after allowing just two earned runs off of seven hits in eight innings against the Royals. If Houston is able to get to him a bit they will have to contend with some solid relief pitching coming out of the pen for Seattle who hold a 3.44 ERA while allowing batters they hit just .225 against them which ranks second in the American League.
