MLS Week 5 sees a full slate with all 22 of the leagues in action this coming weekend. Let’s look at three selected matches for this coming weekend and offer up some hopefully profitable picks again for our soccer readership.

Seattle Sounders vs. Atlanta United

Friday, March 31, 2017: 10 p.m. ET

Clint Dempsey and the defending MLS Cup champions Seattle (1-1-1, 6 GF-5 GA) welcome expansion club Atlanta United (2-0-1, 11 GF-3 GA) to the Emerald City for a Week 5 inter-conference fixture. The essence of this handicap is the reality, Atlanta’s traveling 2,636 miles west from ET to PT, losing three body clock hours in the process, and playing their first match at CenturyLink Field—one of the MLS’s strongest Home-pitch edges. With guys like Nicolás Lodeiro, Jordan Morris, Will Bruin, Harry Shipp, Brad Evans and GK Stefan Frei, this is a strong Roster and a great scheduling spot for the host Sounders despite the sweet Atlanta start. As Leonard Nimoy said, ”Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end.”

Minnesota United vs. Real Salt Lake

Saturday, April 1, 2017: 8 pm ET

Real Salt Lake (0-2-2, 1 GF-4 GA) is still looking for its first win and what better opponent to get than expansion Minnesota United (0-1-3, 6 GF-18 GA), a club whose Overs (4-0) we have been pounding until oddsmakers move Totals. Expect Yura Movsisyan (1 goal) and struggling RSL to break out against the newbies like winless NE did in Week 4, thrashing Christian Ramirez, Kevin Molino and Minnesota, 5-2, and doubling the Total themselves. When a team allows 4.5 gpg a match, it’s fairly obvious what to do, especially with some MLS-naive sportsbooks still hanging 2½ Totals for MUFC. We’ll stay quiet about it, but we will tell the world to go over on this one.

Portland Timbers vs. New England Revolution

Saturday, April 2, 2017:  9 p.m. ET

After a wonderful start, Diego Valeri (4 goals) and the host Timbers (3-0-1, 12 GF-6 GA) are coming off their first loss of the season at Columbus in Week 4 but the Timbers are 2-0-0 (9 GF-3 GA) here in the Rose City. With one of the strongest Home advantages in the league and Timber Joey ready to saw another slab off the ole log, backing the Timbers and laying the lumber is the obvious betting pick here on Sunday night. In L5 meetings, there’ve been five straight Unders in matches averaging 1.40 gpg with Home sides 2-3-0 with three Draws. Fanendo Adi (3 goals) and the Timbers have never allowed an NE goal at Providence Park, going 2-1-0 and outscoring the Revs, 5-0 in three lifetime meetings here. Expect NE to finally score here, but still lose.
