Saturday brings the USMNT’s second group stage match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, against Trinidad and Tobago. After T&T defeated the Americans last year, knocking them out of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying, the USMNT will be seeking revenge.

With momentum coming into the match, and a rather weak opponent, the USMNT are the clear favorites.

The United States roster presents many promising qualities for the tournament; with a mix of both fresh, young talent and experienced veterans, the team looks to be one of the strongest in the competition. While there still seems to be a few kinks to be sorted out under the new head coach, each match strengthens the foundation behind the squad. This was shown in their first Gold Cup match against minnows Guyana, where they produced a strong, but imperfect, 4-0 win. Captain Michael Bradley served well leading the team, while a much more unfamiliar face, Tyler Boyd, stole the show with a strong two-goal performance.

Additionally, as Christian Pulisic continues to gain experience, his leadership within the team furthers. He has grown to be a crucial, and easily the strongest, piece of the puzzle, and his performances going forward will definitely exhibit this. A strong presence up front is not lacking for the USMNT, with both Jozy Altidore and Gyasi Zardes available to link up with Boyd and Pulisic. As the tournament progresses, chemistry throughout the squad will surely strengthen, and the USMNT could very possibly end up lifting the trophy for the second time running.

Looking at the other side, Trinidad and Tobago left Allianz Field with a 2-0 loss against Panama in their first Group D match. Despite keeping it together during the first half, they broke down in the second, allowing Panama two goals within 15 minutes of each other. T&T present a rather unimpressive roster, along with a poor record in the competition; they have only survived the group stage three times out of their ten appearances in the Gold Cup. A loss for T&T will knock them out of the competition.

A win for the United States will ensure advancement into the knockout round, and with a much more compelling squad coming into the match, they are extremely likely to leave Cleveland with a victory on Saturday.

Talk Soccer At SBR's Soccer Betting Forum
