The WTA action continues in Mexico, this time in Monterrey. Join us in our analysis and find out who are the main contenders, the players to keep an eye for our tennis picks.
Last month’s haven’t been easy for Caroline Wozniacki, with the former world no.1 winning only 5 of the 9 matches she played this year. After a controversial withdraw from Dubai – where Caroline used a left knee injury as an excuse but in reality, she had a photoshoot scheduled with Sports Illustrated – the former world no.1 suffered an early loss in Doha against Elena Vesnina. This will be Wozniacki’s second career appearance on this event with the Danish reaching the semifinals in 2014. There are some dangerous players on Wozniacki’s quarter, such as Mirjana Lucic or Timea Babos. If Caroline survives the first rounds, she might face Caroline Garcia or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at the semifinals. Due to Wozniacki’s recent poor results and the dangerous opponents on her side of the draw, it’s impossible for us to find value on her tennis odds at 6.00 on bet365.
The 2015 WTA Monterrey runner-up, Caroline Garcia, will be looking to go a step further this year and claim her second WTA title. Garcia is an extremely dangerous player, with her powerful serve and forehand as her biggest weapons. The French did a great run lately in Dubai, reaching the semifinals in singles and the final in doubles, but couldn’t keep the level in Doha after such a demanding week. Garcia has a great draw and shouldn’t experience any problems in the first two rounds against a qualifier and Alexandra Dulgheru. At the quarterfinals, Caroline might face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and despite Anastasia’s 2 – 0 lead on h2h, the French is currently in better shape and should emerge victorious. As we already mentioned, Caroline Wozniacki can be the opponent at the semifinals and Garcia has the firepower to overcome Wozniacki. With this in mind, we suggest adding Garcia to grab the title at 7.00 on bet365.
Due to an Achilles injury, Dominika Cibulkova had to be away from competition for several months back in 2015 and is now slowly returning to her best level. The Slovakian had a terrific run in Acapulco last week, reaching her first WTA final in almost two years. Dominika was very close from lifting the trophy, losing only on a third set tiebreak against Sloane Stephens. Cibulkova is able to generate a tremendous amount of pace with her groundstrokes, especially from the forehand side, but she’s also known for her inconsistency. The highest ranked player on Cibulkova side is Sara Errani and although the Italian’s good results lately, the last weeks have been too demanding for Sara and after reaching Doha’s final in doubles last week, there won’t be much time for Errani to travel and adjust to the game conditions. Having said that, there are great chances for Cibulkova to go far on this competition and we believe there is value on the Slovakian at 8.00 on bet365.
Player to keep an eye on
Last months have been outstanding for Johanna Konta, with the British winning 30 of the 38 matches she played since Wimbledon. Konta was always referred as an extremely talented player and she’s finally living up the expectations around her. After reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open, Johanna suffered an early loss in Acapulco against Mirjana-Lucic. The British no.1 has a good draw this week and shouldn’t experience any problems on her debut against Mariana Duque-Mariño. After that first round, a tougher contest is expected against Johanna Larsson or Yanina Wickmayer, but Konta is once again the big favorite and should overcome any of them. At the quarterfinals, the highest ranked player she can face is Alison Van Uytvanck, who is a talented young player yet her start of season has been terrible and she shows up in Monterrey with just one victory under her belt this year. Konta might face Dominika Cibulkova at the semifinals in a thrilling contest where any of them can emerge victorious. Konta is currently priced at 13.00 on bet365 and due to the high possibility of a semifinals appearance where she might face Cibulkova, we believe there is value in adding the British to your tennis picks.
