Yanina Wickmayer vs Alja Tomljanovic (7)
Alja Tomljanovic is trying to reach her second career final after being runner up this season in Pattaya City where she lost to Daniela Hantuchova.
Tomljanovic made a huge comeback against one of the main contenders for the title, Madison Brengle, in quarterfinals 1 – 6 6 – 3 6 – 4 in a match where Alja started very slow with only 37% first serve in on first set but managed to cut on the unforced errors while Bengle couldn’t keep a consistent level during the all match.
Yanina Wickmayer also did a comeback in her victory against Kayerina Bondareko 3-6 6-3 6-4 however she should have done better on that first set where Bondarenko converted 1/1 break point while Yanina missed all 6 break point chances. Despite that tough loss on first set the Belgian came back stronger in second set to turn the match and reach semi-finals.
Both players have similar game styles with extremely powerful groundstrokes but struggle to perform at a consistent level. Wickmayer is the more experienced and also the one who can reach a higher level of tennis while Tomljanovic is still an improving player who has momentums where she plays really bad tennis like in first set against Brengle and that is very often determined for her losses.
Yanina has been the more stable of the two and also the one who can play better tennis when both are at the top of their games. This is a great opportunity for Yanina to reach her first WTA final since 2012 and we’ll take her as our tennis pick value on tennis odds.
