In our selection of top plays for the 7th day of the US Open we have selected one match from each competition to go to distance.

Ekaterina Makarova vs. Kristina Mladenovic
Ekaterina Makarova made a great performance against Elina Svitolina, it was a match where the Russian was clearly dominating the baseline rallies while Elina was just trying to return one extra ball and waiting for the errors. Makarova ended the match with 41 winners and 31 unforced errors which is really good, however when she was serving for the match at 6 – 5 with 40 – 15 started to cramp in a way she said that never had before and got scared with it.

Kristina Mladenovic is a very dangerous player with her big serve and forehand as the major weapons of her game. The French has always struggled to perform at a consistent level, however when she’s able to play her best game she can cause problems to anyone. This week she has been very solid winning all matches in straight sets and in her last match against Kasatkina ended with great numbers: 24 winners and 15 unforced errors.

This is a good matchup for Makarova, she has great counter puncher skills and should use them against Mladenovic firepower however the Russian doesn’t seem at 100% physically and is clearly struggling to keep a high level during all match. Mladenovic is also a very inconsistent player and this has conditions to be a pretty long match as the previous two matches also show - Makarova won both in three sets. For this contest our advice is to take the Over expecting this match to go to distance, the original line is Over 22 at +104 tennis odds, however since we expect this to three sets we’ll take the highest line available for our tennis picks.

Tennis Pick: Over 23.5 Games at +140

Marin Cilic vs. Jeremy Chardy
Defending champion Marin Cilic had a very tough match against Mikhail Kukushking needing five sets to overcome the player from Kazakhstan. Cilic keeps far from the level presented in 2014 ending the match against Kukushkin with 55 winners and 53 unforced errors. The main weapon from Cilic has been clearly his serve firing 27 aces in his last match and winning 84% of points with first serve.

Jeremy Chardy is for the first time in his career in 4th round of US Open and he’ll try to repeat his best career result in Grand Slams when he reached quarter-finals of Australian Open in 2013. Jeremy has been performing at great level in the US Open series reaching semi-finals of Montreal (lost to Novak Djokovic) and in Cincinnati lost also to a top player, Rafael Nadal. This week has done very good so far with his best win in 3rd round against David Ferrer with his forehand making huge damage on the Spanish.

The h2h is 1 – 1 with Cilic winning the most recent match last season in Wimbledon 7 – 6 6 – 4 6 – 4, however grass is a surface where Chardy has more problems. Jeremy performs at his best level on clay and hard court where he has more time to do the runaround to hit his massive forehand. This should be a very close contest, from the baseline Cilic has been far from impressive and Chardy should make huge damage with the forehand while Marin will be looking for short points and higher % of first serve in. This contest should be pretty equal and wouldn’t be surprising to see five sets here but his Over might also be won in four sets with one or two tie breaks in this match between two great servers.
