WTA Wimbledon: Valuable Free Picks & Top Plays For Day 3

Nicolas Mahut vs. David Ferrer (13)
Grass is clearly Nicolas Mahut favorite surface, with all his four career titles won on grass – the last one a few weeks ago in s-Hertogenbosch. Nicolas is known for his serve & volley style, which is extremely effective on this surface. Despite Mahut’s success on grass, he only won 7 out of 17 matches in Wimbledon’s main draw, a very poor record for such an expert on this surface. On the first round, Mahut experienced no problems against Brydan Klein, defeating the qualifier by 7 – 6 6 – 4 6 – 4 with 33 winners / 22 unforced errors and 22/30 net points won.

It hasn’t been an easy year for David Ferrer with the Spaniard already outside top 10; however, the Spaniard can never be underestimated, especially on a Grand Slam event where he usually performs at his best. One of the great players’ main features is their ability to play at their best on the biggest stages and Ferrer is no exception, with a 72.02% career winning record on Grand Slam events vs a 67.83% overall record. Ferrer started his campaign with a superb victory against Dudi Sela, dismissing the Israelite by 6 – 2 6 – 1 6 – 1.

This will be the 2nd career meeting between these two players, with Ferrer winning their previous one five years ago.

As we mentioned before, things are way different on Grand Slam events and that should be the key on this match. Ferrer is one of the best returners on the tour and it won’t be easy for Mahut to win free points on his serve. The value is clearly on David’s tennis odds and for that reason, our suggestion is for you to place a bet on the Spaniard to win this contest.

Marin Cilic (9) vs. Sergiy Stakhovsky
Looking at Sergiy Stakhovsky’s game style, the Ukrainian has all the weapons to be successful on grass – strong serve, great skills around the net and a very tricky backhand slice. This is a very special tournament for Stakhovsky, with the world no.94 achieving his best career victory in 2013 when he surprised Roger Federer in a match where the Ukrainian was priced at +4184. It was a very strong start from Stakhovsky, defeating Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets and ending the match with 44 winners / 26 unforced errors.

Marin Cilic is looking for another good campaign in Wimbledon after reaching the quarterfinals in 2014 and 2015 – losing in both cases against Novak Djokovic. Cilic is always a very dangerous player on grass due to his massive serve; however, it’s never easy for him to maintain a consistent level. Looking at Cilic’s results in Wimbledon throughout his career, only 44.44% of his victories were achieved in straight sets. One of those triumphs took place in the first round against Brian Baker by 6 – 3 7 – 5 6 – 3, in a match where Baker had 6 break points chances but couldn’t convert them.

These two players know each other well with four previous meetings between them and with Cilic leading the h2h by 4 – 0.

Despite Marin’s dominance on the h2h, Stakhovsky won one set in three of those encounters and this will also be their first meeting on grass. This should be a much closer match than the odds suggest, the Ukrainian is always a very dangerous player on this surface and with that in mind, we’ll add his set handicap to our tennis picks.
