Belgium vs Argentina
Belgium returns to a semi-final 16 years later after losing to France 1 – 4 in 1999 while Argentina look for 4th final since 2006.
Argentina is a very strong team at home with a huge support from the fans and playing always on clay. This season they played the two previous ties at home against Brazil and Serbia but this time will have to go to Belgium to play on very tough conditions. Belgium choose Indoor Hard where their players feel extremely comfortable while Argentinean players struggle with the game conditions.
David Goffin is the highest ranked player and he loves to play on this fast surfaces where his counter puncher skills and high pace are very effective. David should be able to win the two singles matches he will play, the first against Federico Delbonis on Friday and on Sunday the 4th rubber against Leonardo Mayer.
Steve Darcis is the other player who should play the singles matches for Belgium and the conditions also suit his game style. Steve has his best career results on Indoor Hard with 64.62% winning record against a career average of 60.80% on all surfaces.
On Friday Darcis will face Leonardo Mayer and the South-American player should be favorite but won’t be an easy match for Leo who is a super aggressive but also inconsistent player and Darcis should take good advantage of that with his slice backhand and great experience.
If there is need for a 5th match on Sunday should be Darcis against Delbonis and the Belgian has the advantage on this contest. Delbonis is a terrible Indoor Hard player with a 37.04% career winning record on this surface and will have to play such an important match against the crowd. Darcis is a super experienced player and should be able to take advantage of that to explore Federico’s problems on this game conditions to take the win.
It’s hard to say who will play the doubles match, in previous tie Belgium used Ruben Bemelmans and Kimmer Coppejans but there might be some changes in such an important tie. Argentina should keep the team Carlos Berlocq & Leonardo Mayer and this will be for sure a very close match no matter who plays on it.
Belgium is the favorite for the win at -227 on the tennis odds at Bet365 and Goffin should be the key for their success on this tie.
Great Britain vs Australia
Great Britain is looking for first Davis Cup title since 1936 but first they need to defeat Australia in order to book a place in the final.
There shouldn’t be much history on the singles matches in this tie, for Great Britain the No.1 player Andy Murray should win the two singles matches while young Kyle Edmund won’t have many chances against the Australian team that should play with Bernard Tomic and Thanasi Kokkinakis on Friday and on Sunday with Lleyton Hewitt if there is a decisive 5th match.
The decisive match and main focus on this semi-final is clearly the doubles match like it happened in previous Great Britain tie against France. The British time will play with the brothers Andy and Jamie Murray who were decisive against France while Australia will present their usual team with Hewitt and Sam Groth.
Groth and Hewitt were decisive in last tie against Kazakhstan on grass turning 0 – 2 to 3 – 2 with a doubles win and each winning a singles match, however this time they will have to face a much better team in conditions that aren’t so good for them. They played already in Indoor Hard against Czech Republic and lost the doubles match against the unexperienced team Pavlasek & Vesely in 5 sets. There are two major weaknesses on this team that makes them vulnerable: 1) Hewitt serve is extremely inconsistent and should give several chances for the opponents to break them; 2) Groth has a massive serve but is a very limited player on the baseline and can’t make much with his return to serve.
Andy and Jamie are a very strong team who can mix the returning qualities from Andy with the doubles experience and great skills around the net from Jamie. In previous tie they got a huge win over Tsonga & Mahut after losing first set where Andy return to serve was decisive for their victory and should be once again on this contest.
Great Britain are the favorites to reach the final priced at -164 on Bet365 and they won’t miss this opportunity.
Our tennis pick for this semifinals is to combine Great Britain and Belgium to win
