Our main favorite for the title, Ferrer, is just one match away from the tropy. Find out our top tennis pick selection for this Sunday's ATP Vienna final.
David Ferrer (1) vs. Steve Johnson
Our advice before the competition was to pick David Ferrer as the player to win the title and the Spaniard is already in the decisive match after a super close match against Gael Monfils. It was a tremendous battle between the two players but Ferrer was stronger mentally, saving all six points and closing the match after 2 hours by 7 – 6 7 – 5.
David has been outstanding on finals this year, with a 4 – 0 record in decisive matches. The last final Ferrer lost was exactly one year ago, in this same tournament against Andy Murray. However, this time he’s the main favorite and has a great chance to claim his 5th season trophy.
It has been a dream week for Steve Johnson, the American reaches his first ATP career final after four tough matches. In our semifinals analysis we predicted Ernest Gulbis to defeat Johnson, however Steve was just too solid on serve and much more consistent from the baseline.
As we mentioned in our semifinals preview, Johnson is serving at an outstanding level this week, winning more than 90% of games on his serve. However, he’ll face one of the best world returners on this final and will be very hard to keep those numbers.
Ferrer’s inside out forehand should be the key for his success on this final. The Spaniard loves to take control of the rallies with the forehand and will use that shot to explore Johnson’s weakest backhand.
Steve will face a terrific returner and will be hard for him to win free points on his serve. Johnson will have to be more aggressive and explore his net game otherwise, he’ll be crushed on baseline rallies against Ferrer.
