One of boxing’s brightest stars and finest talents returns to the ring Saturday when WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia takes on IBF champion Robert Easter Jr. at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Unfortunately, oddsmakers disagree with him as Garcia is a huge betting favorite that is currently sitting between -800 and as high as -1400, while Easter is the massive underdog hovering between +550 and +850.

[/]{"component":"video", "type":"youtube", "url":"https://www.youtube.com/embed/NLLZPa7sSpU", "videoSize":"Large" }[/]

The first question that should be asked is whether Easter should be that significant of an underdog. The short answer is no. However, it needs to be put into context before you decide to drop any coin on the 27-year-old. Easter will have an 8-inch reach advantage and nearly half a foot in the height department when he faces Garcia on Saturday night. He’s also undefeated with a record of 21-0 with 14 knockouts. He uses his reach and height to his advantage but is unafraid to go to war with his opponent. There’s a lot to like about Robert Easter.

The problem is that he’s facing a Mikey Garcia who has been trampling the opposition with no remorse. There are going to be questions about the quality of opposition that is attached to his 38-0 record with 30 knockouts, but there are just enough recognizable names that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to play off his run as any kind of fluke. The fact of the matter is that Garcia is legit and possesses the tools to trouble everyone he faces. He has impeccable timing and an understanding of space. His power is enough to force an opponent to reconsider their plan of attack and he has solid footwork.

It’s difficult to fathom a situation where Easter can win the fight. It’s not impossible, just unlikely. But it’s all made a bit more challenging when you look at Easter’s struggles with Javier Fortuna, who lost to the middling Jason Sosa, and Richard Commey that gives you pause. On paper, Easter squeezed out a decision against the former in a fight that many thought he lost. The latter was an exciting scrap but also suggested that Easter wasn’t quite ready to face boxing’s elite. Make no mistake about it, Garcia is certainly one of boxing’s elite.

This doesn’t mean Easter should be such a significant underdog. He’s absolutely talented and his physical attributes could cause problems if Easter finds a way to keep Garcia on the end of his jab throughout the 12-round affair. Truthfully, Garcia’s ring IQ is far too good to fall for Easter’s traps.

This line makes it impossible to bet on Garcia, but it’s just wide enough to have you consider a shot in the dark with Easter. If you can get him at +850 or higher, why not? You could throw away your money on worse things that have zero chance of yielding a return.

Prop bets weren’t available at press time. But if a decent line on Garcia by stoppage emerges, take it. Easter has been wobbled by lesser punchers and Garcia is likely looking to end his two-fight streak without a knockout. For now, your only chance at finding value is taking Easter at the biggest underdog line possible and hope for the best.
