If the sportsbooks aren’t going to learn that the Mercury’s defense is turning to mush, then we must keep hitting them in the last game without Brittany Griner.

Griner will be serving the last game of her three-game suspension on Sunday and while I’m pretty sure the Mercury can beat the Liberty tonight, it’s going to be very tough.

The Liberty are almost just playing for pride at this point and as we have talked about before, they can get up in pace and play lax defense as well.

For this play, I’m predictably focused on the first half again. The Liberty have been one of the worst first half defenses in the NBA this season, allowing 103.1 points per 100 possessions. On the road it gets worse, with a defensive rating of 108.3 in their first halves on the road.

However, the Mercury haven’t exactly been a great first half defense even with Griner on the floor. They are allowing 96.5 points per 100 possessions in the first half, and that gets worse at home with a defensive rating of 101.7.

Add in the fact that they are allowing 110.8 points per 100 possessions in their last five first halves, and over the last two games without Griner, it has gone up to 112.8.

Even though having Amanda Zahui B back tonight will help the Liberty defense, it likely won’t be enough to keep the Mercury from scoring upwards of 40 first half points.

In their first and only meeting this season, these two combined for 81 points and I will be surprised if they don’t get above 80 in this first half as well. The Liberty may also be a nice play ATS with the Mercury’s defense falling apart.

Las Vegas Aces at Chicago Sky

Another first half on Sunday that could bring about a ton of scoring is the Sky and Aces. This will be the third meeting between these two and so far, and they are averaging a combined 99 points in their two first halves so far.

I could see this game being a little lower scoring, but then again, assuming the first half total is around 82 or 82.5 points, it’s still an over play for me at this point in the morning while the line isn’t quite out.

The Sky play at one of the fastest first half paces in the league and that has only gone up lately. They are playing at a pace of 105.6 in their last five first halves, and with the Aces coming to town, that likely won’t slow down either.

The Aces on the other hand play at a first half pace of nearly 102, and their last five first halves haven’t been very pretty defensively either.

The Aces have become known for their stout defense, but while their first half offense has improved some over their last five, they are also giving up 104.3 points per 100 possessions in those games.
