Tottenham and Liverpool collide in week 16 EPL betting. Here’s a primer on this much-anticipated clash with soccer odds and free picks.

Tottenham’s biting challenge

Tottenham take on Liverpool as the favourites albeit on the short side of even money at +150 to win outright at Bet365.

Tottenham are sat pretty in sixth place with an 8-3-4 record and 27 points, a point shy of Everton in fifth and two points shy of Man City in fourth. The curious stat that sets Spurs apart from both aforementioned rivals – and the rest of the chasing pack as well – is the goal differential. The Spurs have only scored 15 goals through 15 laps but conceded a whopping 16, giving them a -1 differential. Clearly, that is something they’ll need to improve if they hope to make a concerted push for a Top 4 spot, never mind challenging for the title.

Though the goals-against tally was skewed significantly by a 6-0 disembowelling by Man City four weeks ago, it’s hard to overlook what is obviously a stuttering offense that has produced just an average of a goal per game; a fact that is a point of contention by critics who question the so-called talent AVB dished out 100 million on over the summer transfer window.

Since the humiliation at the Etihad however the Spurs seem to have shaken off whatever it was that ailed them as they are on a five game unbeaten streak across all competitions and have upped the goal tally to an impressive average of two goals a game in Premier League. They managed to hold Man U to a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane and beat both Fulham and Sunderland 2-1 on the road.

That upsurge in form bodes well for the Spurs as they return to White Hart Lane but – let’s face it – this season’s Man U bears little resemblance to that of years past. And beating a hapless Fulham and Sunderland isn’t exactly something to hang one’s hat on in sports betting, certainly not with an impending visit from an in-form Liverpool.

In-form Liverpool at the disadvantage

Second in the table following a 9-3-3 record and 30 points, Liverpool are five points shy of league leaders Arsenal. Liverpool rank fifth overall in the league’s form table ahead of week 16 with a 3-1-2 mark in their last six games, home and away, for a tally of ten points. They lost to Arsenal at the Emirates 2-0 and to Hull City at Kingston Communications Stadium 3-1 – the latter was an unexpected result that saw the hosts turn the soccer odds well and truly in their favour.

Recent form has been staggering with Liverpool winning the last two fixtures by a combined score of 9-2; a 5-1 win over Norwich City that saw Luis Suarez put on a superb display of individual brilliance, scoring four goals seemingly at whim, and a 4-1 win over West Ham United that really should have been 5-0 had Martin Skrtel not scored an own goal.

Despite this solid form and their current status in the league’s table, Liverpool are tipped at the significant disadvantage across sportsbooks. Bet365 is listing a Liverpool win at +200 and the draw at an even larger +240. Perhaps road form has played a part in this market outlook, which stands at a modest 2-3-2 overall and an even worse 1-2-2 in their last five. That and recent news of Gerrard’s injury that is deemed a big blow to the club.

Soccer Betting Verdict: Both teams are comparable on recent form and they go into this match full of confidence, looking to take all three points. Tottenham have the home advantage and that goes some way towards explaining their fancied soccer odds across sportsbooks. However, their offense has been unreliable and while it has taken positive strides of late, they aren’t enough to recommend them as our soccer pick on the win. In fact, sports betting polls reveal a conspicuous lean towards Liverpool in this match and we agree with the public. Granted Liverpool meanwhile struggled on the road this season and haven’t won on the away since beating Sunderland 3-1 on September 29, but recent form suggests they could be on the verge of improving that mark and, in turn, turning the hefty +200 soccer odds in their favour. Heck, Luis Suarez could do it alone if he has another out-of-this-world day.
