Arsenal stated clear intent to keep hold of their Champions League spot based on the way that they mercilessly dispatched Wigan 4-1 on Tuesday night. That result catapulted them above Tottenham in the Premier League table.
For a rundown of all of the week's action, take a look at my Premier League Weekend Tips & Predictions.
In case you haven't been paying attention to the Champions League race, Arsenal currently sits in fourth, just two points behind Chelsea and one point ahead of Spurs. Therefore it is possible that Tottenham and Arsenal could both overtake Chelsea, however Chelsea would have to lose and Tottenham would not only have to win, but improve their goal difference by about 15 goals. That's highly unlikely, so the last thing worth shouting about this Premier League season is Arsenal versus Tottenham for the last Champions League place.
Some extra options for our soccer picks include selecting where teams finish in the final Premier League standings. Chelsea finishing the Premier League season in third place is on offer at 1/6, with Arsenal ending up the bronze medal places at 7/2, and Spurs doing the highly unlikely is at 14/1.
Tottenham are playing Sunderland, and although they are just above the dreaded dotted line on 39 points won't be going down thanks to the fact that Arsenal beat Wigan on Tuesday night and Spurs will be expecting to take a full three point advantage from the Black Cats. That means that Arsenal has to do as well or better than Tottenham to stay in the Champions League club.
Newcastle, by comparison, kick off the final day 13th in the league on 41 points knowing that even if they were to win and all the games above them go their way, they would be 10th at best. However should Southampton, Fulham, Villa and Sunderland all win Newcastle will end the season 17th and just above the dotted line themselves.
Tough at the bottom, exciting at the top.
Arsenal will be full of themselves, as they have put nine goals past Newcastle in the last two games against the Geordies (7-3 and 2-1 the last two times the met). A repeat of those scores is available at soccer odds of 500/1 and 7/1 while any Arsenal win is t 11/17. Interestingly enough, the last two times Newcastle hosted Arsenal the game ended drawn 0-0 and 4-4 a repeat of those scores is available at 18/1 and 450/1 respectively although any draw is at 3/1.
I can't really see any reason why Arsenal, who haven't lost a game the nine straight matches and only dropped points twice in that run, will do the Toon Army any favours. In the last 10 games, Newcastle have only recorded three victories and two draws.
This game is more of a foregone conclusion then you could shake a stick at. However if you want to go a little bit wild ahead of Sunday's kick-off while back Arsenal at 16/1 to win the Premier League next season. With two new managers in Manchester and probably another one in Chelsea le Professor might just sneak a winning season back to the Emirates.
Prediction: Arsenal win 2-0 available at 7/1 with bet365.
