At the top of the Spanish league that club called Barcelona have ran away with it and are 17 points ahead of anybody else and the neatly tied up (with a very neat bow) for a very long time now, that Spanish League.
Elsewhere in the Spanish table still find some games with things worth playing for.
Deportivo are sitting anything but pretty, fourth from bottom. They can't claim anything from the two teams directly above them, who are both on 39 points as there is just three pounds left to play for. However, while they may be just above that dreaded dotted line directly below them is not one but two teams on 34 points and the team at the bottom of the league are on 33 points. As there is still only ever three-points for a victory and nothing for a defeat (and one for a draw) it does mean that any one of the bottom four teams in Spain could still go down….another way of looking at it is that any of the three bottom four teams in Spain could well go down.
Just as it's relevant you should know that Deportivo are at soccer odds of 11/13 to relegated, 18th place Celta de Vigo are 2/5 to relegated and the team who share a 34 point with them, that's Real Zaragoza are 1/10 and last but by no means least Mallorca (currently last) are 1/19.
And Real Sociedad are 3/1 on a top four finish.
The good news is that for Deportivo, their fate lies very much in their hands as if they can do better than the teams below them, a.k.a. win a game and take maximum points against Real Sociedad they will stay up.
Deportivo have home advantage but considering how they've only won six, drawn five and lost seven games at home all season, scoring 23 goals and conceding 25 that doesn't imply a great deal of a confidence when you're staring relegation in the face.
Real Sociedad, by comparison when they go on their travels have not fared that much better they've won seven, drawn five and lost six. What's more they've scored 28 and conceded 27.
Stats stats and stats
Those sort of stars would suggest that this game will be anyone’s. However with a game like this wherein the draw doesn't seem to do anybody any favours you can really think that somebody's going for the big score. The big question is will it be the side who are fighting for a top four place or will it be the side are fighting for their top-flight survival.
Basically, we wouldn't back a draw with our sports picks in this situation.
Your Humble Handicapper also says they should back goals and what's more than that you should bet on the team further up the table doing the business, winning the match and the team at the wrong end of the table having a bad made worse by the fact that they can be relegated.
I think this game is very tight and I think this game is to go 2-1 to the visitors.
