The Bundesliga 2013-2014 season burst onto the summer stage on a high-octane note, goals galore were scored in week 1 around the league. So it is with a lot of excitement that we look ahead to the second week’s betting card and the clash between VfB Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen at the Mercedes-Benz-Arena, slated for a 15:30 kick-off on Saturday 17 August.

Bayer Leverkusen hit the road as favourites

Sportsbooks across all platforms have listed Bayer Leverkusen as the favourites to win outright when they descend on Mercedes-Benz-Arena in week 2 of Bundesliga action. The best bit though – wait for it – they are on the long side of even money at +110. Savvy bettors ‘in-the-know’ know whenever prices get long, the better the returns are.

Bayer Leverkusen ran away comfortable winners in the opening week against Freiburg. As hosts, they won 3-1 to the delight of their fans and newly acquired Heung Min Son marked his debut with the match winner at the Bay Arena. All in all, it was a good day for Sami Hyypiä’s men and a positive start to the season.

Last season, Bayer finished third in the league and, as such, spirits are high. They are expected to do similarly this season, if not challenge for the title. But third in line to the Bundesliga title at quadruple digits – at +3300 with Bet365 to be exact – which is significantly longer than both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund who are in triple digits – makes them rather a long shot choice for your soccer picks at this point in time. Still a strong start to the season will go a long way towards redressing their chances and odds.

Hyypiä will be looking to build on the opening win with another win at Stuttgart and if the odds were any indication, they do appear to be a good bet to do just that. That said, bookies seem to price a 1-1 draw the shortest of the lot at +550 – should we be taking a page from that and leaning towards the overall draw at soccer odds of +225? Next best prices can be found on a 2-1 win at +800 and a 1-0 win at +900 for Bayer.

It’s not just the odds that are stacked against Stuttgart

It’s not just the odds that are stacked against Stuttgart, although they couldn’t be more impressively stacked had they been the Berlin wall – a +250 price tag to win outright at home is a hefty vote against the hosts indeed. But also popular opinion is stacked against them as well.

Stuttgart, who finished middle-of-the-table last season, failed to impress in their opener despite it being a five-goal extravaganza. The charge against them in is that they seem to be heavily reliant on just one player Vedad Ibisevic. That and defence and goalkeeping could be spruced up a bit.

Granted, Ibisevic is great and has been in fine scoring form so far, but in three competitive matches this season alone, he’s been their lone scorer. One man cannot win a game, let alone a season full of games. Simple as that.

Against Mainz Ibisevic opened the scoring in the 3-2 defeat at Coface Arena when he quickly responded to Muller’s 14 minute goal with an equalizer two minutes later. Okazaki and Muller doubled Mainz’s lead in the second half however. Thankfully it wasn’t alI down to Ibisevic as he got help from Harnik on the scoreboard but his chance to score late in the game was the best opportunity Stuttgart saw to salvage the point but alas it went begging.

Two of the last three meetings between Stuttgart and Bayer settled on a draw – in fact, both were 2-2 draws, which incidentally can be found at +900 at Bet365. Certainly, for Stuttgart, a draw against one of the top teams in Bundesliga would be a result to celebrate but given their opening account on the season, it does seem to be a little too much to hope for a stake in the match so.

Soccer Betting Verdict: All in all, Bayer at +110 is the value play here.
