David Moyes hasn’t enjoyed the easiest of starts to his reign as Manchester United manager. A string of less than impressive performances, a thumping in his first Manchester derby and eighth place in the Premiership table were not what fans were expecting when he took over from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Quietly, though, people are coming to realise that Ferguson’s decision to quit at the end of last season, surprising though it was, was even cannier than people realised. Moyes has inherited a United squad on their way down. Fergie, whatever you might think of him, got out before it started going bad for him and Moyes is now reaping that particular whirlwind.

Losing Robin van Persie to injury hasn’t exactly helped, either, but a club like United shouldn’t need excuses like that. The fact is that the quality and the strength in depth just isn’t there for them right now.

Taking all of that into consideration, there probably couldn’t be a better time for them to visit the Ukranian champions. They are a tough soccer betting proposition, as evidenced by their 2-0 away win at Real Sociedad in the opening group round. They, too, have problems, having sold most of their big names at the end of the last Ukranian season. It is, therefore, far better for United to play Shakhtar now, whilst Moyes is still in something of a honeymoon period.

United are currently the sports betting favorites to win this game, best priced at 7/4 with Stan James, but Shakhtar are only slight outsiders, priced at 9/5 with Coral in the soccer odds. This is where that Moyes honeymoon period becomes necessary, because very few teams come away from the former Soviet bloc with a good result and it is hard to see United winning this one.
