Europe gets back to Champions League action, with the two big names in Group E, as Chelsea meets Schalke. Where do our tipsters believe the best value lies for our soccer picks in this matchup?

Even at this early stage, it seems obvious to say that Chelsea’s Group E campaign hasn’t got off to the best of starts. The home defeat to Basel in the opening round of fixtures has left them playing catch-up in the group, a situation that a second round win in Bucharest did little to alleviate, as Schalke then went to Basel and won there.

It is no exaggeration, then, to say that this is the tie that could determine Chelsea’s fate in this competition. With Basel almost certain to win their next two games (both against Steaua Bucharest), not losing in Germany becomes an imperative, to say the least. They are likely to go into this game without their most experienced player, as Ashley Cole continues to recover from the rib injury that that ruled him out of England’s World Cup qualifiers.

The market makes Chelsea slight the soccer odds favorites for this game at 2.5 practically across the board. The closeness of the game is reflected by the fact that Schalke are only at 2.9 with Paddy Power, whilst William Hill put the draw at 3.5.

Of those options, the draw looks to be the most likely. As noted above, it is the not losing which is important to them, because that means that provided they beat Basel in Switzerland in November they should still go through to the knockout stages. Schalke, meanwhile, know that losing would cede the huge advantage that they have over their Group E rivals. Expect this to be a game of two teams playing it cautiously for the full 90 minutes. If you are feeling bolder than they are likely to, you could even toss your soccer picks on a 1-1 scoreline at 7.5 with BetVictor.
