The battle for fourth is on-going
Valencia applied the pressure on Real Sociedad with a win over Getafe early on Saturday but the Txuri-udin responded at the time of asking with a 2-1 win over Seville on the road to maintain their slim hold on fourth place in La Liga.
Real Sociedad were rather lucky to win over Getafe however as Ivan Rakitic headed a Real Sociedad free kick into his own goal, six minutes after he’d put his side (Seville) up a goal. Grateful, Real Sociedad then took the lead in the 24th minute and went on to hold that lead to the end. Phew!
Going into the weekend, Real Sociedad is faced with a much tougher task when they take on the illustrious Real Madrid. Or so it would seem on paper: Real Madrid is second in the table with a 25-6-5 record and 81 points. Crucially, where this matchup is concerned, Real Madrid has won the last seven fixtures over Real Sociedad, including the reverse fixture earlier this season, 4-3 at the Bernabéu. Overall, the Madrilenos own a lopsided 18-8-8 record over Real Sociedad.
Paper notwithstanding, Real Madrid is in the midst of an existential crisis right now. Everything has gone horribly wrong for the club and, more specifically, for the Special One whose back the club can’t wait to see.
Given the inner turmoil in the nation’s capital and what’s at stake for Real Sociedad here, the bookies are tipping their fast-approaching date rather close. Real Sociedad is listed at +140 while Real Madrid is tipped slightly larger at +180 betting odds at William Hill. The draw is priced at +240.
Real Madrid upset at Copa Del Rey
Real Madrid is flush off a huge upset at the weekend when Atletico Madrid scored in extra-time to defeat Los Merengues 2-1 and lift the Copa Del Ray.
What should have been Real Madrid’s crowning moment (or so many thought) on the season, the only chance for silverware, ended in the worst way possible with tempers flaring, Jose Mourinho being sent off in the 75th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo being sent off in the second extra time and Atletico scoring in extra time to defeat their cross-city rivals for the first time since 1999.
Former President, Ramon Calderon, recently blasted Jose Mourinho in the press, calling him a failure and encapsulating his tenure as one of the worst records of any Real Madrid manager who has had three years or more.
So, with Real Madrid left reeling so and the Special One on his way out of the club, what can fans expect in this weekend’s fixture that – let’s face it – has no bearing on Real’s season, save perhaps to save face after the Copa Del Rey debacle? Not much, probably.
Soccer Betting Verdict: Real Sociedad has a rare chance to score a victory over Real Madrid, and a much-needed victory at that. On paper, Real Madrid looks to be the smart play but now, at this late stage of the season, it’s no longer so much about the Xs and Os rather the intangibles. The disaster that was Copa Del Rey, the disappointing season overall and the ignominious ending to Jose Mourinho’s tenure at Real, it’s hard to see how Los Merengues can muster up any enthusiasm for a fixture that is no significance for them.
