The Catalans have the firm advantage and they're again favored for Wednesday's match, getting listed at -220 at 5Dimes to get the victory. Real Sociedad is approaching +700 soccer odds, while a draw is at +400 or so at the top sportsbooks.
Sociedad lost 2-0 in the first leg, as a Sergio Busquets goal and an own goal from Zubikarai made the difference. That means there's a huge hill to climb, regardless of the fact they'll be in the comfortable confines in Anoeta.
Things didn't go any better for Sociedad in their league match four days later, as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Levante.
That's now over 270 straight minutes without a goal for Jagoba Arrasate's team, a streak they'll be hoping to end against one of the world's best on Wednesday.
In La Liga, Sociedad is currently in sixth place, a small dropdown after an impressive fourth-place finish in the 2012/13 campaign. They're scoring plenty of goals (42), but are struggling with their defensive discipline, with Barcelona ready to pounce again.
As far as their form at home, Sociedad has looked very strong, winning seven times to go along with three draws and one loss in 11 La Liga matches. Their goal differential (+20) is excellent, but clearly they'll have to perform way better than they did against Levante.
A good response from the Catalans after their 2-3 home loss to Valencia has seen them beat Real Sociedad in the first leg as well as Sevilla in La Liga.
The Sevillistas had been struggling and Barcelona added to their misery with a 4-1 win. Messi had a brace to go along with goals from Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas. With the three points, the Catalans moved into a three-way tie with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid atop the table.
It was good to see Messi return to form with his two well-taken goals. However, even more encouraging for Gerardo Martino's side is how his other attacking threats have stepped up in his absence and since his return.
Sanchez and Fabregas are just two of those names. The former leads the team with 14 league goals (five assists), while Fabregas has come up with eight goals and a team-best 10 assists. Pedro (12 goals and six assists) has also been very influential this term.
With so many options at his disposal, there's no doubt Barcelona will be fielding a strong starting XI.
Copa del Rey Pick
Barcelona is beginning to find their stride again and that's not good news for Sociedad. They're already down two goals and the Catalans followed that up with a dominant performance against a solid Sevilla outfit.
Momentum is picking up and, even with Barcelona able to sit back should they wish, we expect them to still put at least a couple past the hosts in the return leg. Sociedad is not in good form at the moment either.
With our soccer picks, we're backing yet another win for Martino's men. Are you rolling with Messi and company as well?
