It's time for the Battle of Madrid and your Humble Handicapper doesn't have a particular loyalty to either Atlético or Real.

Check out our report on Spanish La Liga 2013-14 Betting Futures!

He is, however, fiercely loyal to Mrs. Richardson's shoe fund. (Editor's note: Seriously.)

The Spanish Primera División league is a mere five games old at press time, and it's the Atlético side of Madrid who's looking all the happier. Somewhat unsurprisingly, Barcelona are out in front with their 100% record of five wins out of five in the Spanish top flight. Possibly more surprising is the fact that right behind them, tied on an equal number of points, is Atlético Madrid who have been pushed into the silver medal position by having a slightly inferior goal difference.

Still, Barca are 8/13 sports betting favourites to win the league and Atlético are 33/1 third favourites, Real Madrid have only amassed 10 points from four games having drawn one of their matches but are still very much in the competition (and second favourites at 7/5).

Enough with the table… WHERE’S THE MONEY, MIKE?

I want to draw you attention to the fact that the last two times at the sides met it was the away side that came out on top and it was the same result, with the game ending 2-1. The away side winning by it this time is available at 19/1 and winning by any score is at 7/1.

However, looking a bit further back you will see that Real came out on top 4-out-of-5 times in the last meetings between these two sides. Real Madrid winning is at 4/7, while that most uncommon of beasts, a draw between these two, is available at 12/5 soccer betting odds.

I think we should all get behind the home side as they do have something to prove, and have the home field advantage as well. I would say, whatever you do, don't bet on the game ending goalless as the last five encounters between these two sides have only ever seen one clean sheet, held by Real Madrid back in December 2012.

Not So Hard Sums

Doing a bit of gambling math, we learn that there have been 18 goals in the last five meetings between these two sides, and somewhere between three and four goals per game on average. What is considerably more interesting is the fact that the losing side on 4/5 occasions has only scored a single solitary goal. Therefore I suggest you start betting on the 2-1 final result at 17/2, the 3-1 at 11/1 and even the 4-1 at 20/1. You may think a five-goal stunner is a bit outlandish, but in the last five meetings between these teams, Real Madrid come out as 4-1 victors on two separate occasions back at the start of 2012 and towards the end of 2011.

Some might say that Madrid aren’t the side that they once were; but then again, we’re all getting older. Even so, I still think that they will come out on top and I think they can win the two goal cushion. Consider Real for your soccer picks.
