So it’s business as usual as we take a look at this weekly installment of the best bets on the Premier League sports betting menu.
Hull City vs. Cardiff
Analysis: Three laps into Premier League and Hull City is sat exactly where many experts expect the club to be by the end of the season: the relegation queue. In 18th place with a 1-0-2 record and three points to show for their effort, the Tigers fail to impress. Then again, they received no favours from the schedule. To have both Chelsea and Manchester City to contend with in the first few weeks of the new season is the proverbial short straw. Their lone win came at home to Norwich City.
Cardiff meanwhile, is riding high in top-flight action. They sat pretty in 11th place with four points and hobnobbing with the likes of Man U (also on four points). They boast a 1-1-1 record which includes their impressive 3-2 win over Man City that sent seismic shockwaves through the soccer betting markets. However, since then the Bluebirds have come crashing down to reality with a thud. Last lap saw them hold Everton to a scoreless draw; which was an encouraging result because they earned a crucial point, but it was also the second match in a row without finding the back of the net and that is concerning. They must find their scoring feet if they hope to build on their encouraging start – they recently signed Peter Odemwingie who they hope will help in that regard. (Important to note: they did so in League Cup action winning 2-0 over Accrington Stanley).
Verdict: The hosts are favoured in this match albeit on the long side of even money at +130. With home advantage and an opportunity to get their season on track, backing the Tigers does appear to be a good pick. The Welsh however have to like their chances here against a side that is virtually a Premier League lightweight. And at +200 to win outright at Bet365, the Bluebirds are worth considering on your wagering ticket. After all, they could underscore their encouraging start on the season with surprise win against the Tigers who – let’s face it – have barely struck an audible chord.
Analysis: Everton host Chelsea at the weekend in a match that is delicately nestled on a betting line with angles for profit on both sides of the coin. Everton, tipped at + 225 at Bet365, is the underdog despite having home advantage. Clearly that is down to the special quality of their opponent.
Interestingly, the Blues don’t have this market cornered as some would have expected. Make no mistake: they are the favourites; but on the long side of even money at +130 to win outright at Bet365, they are only just favoured. That’s good news for Chelsea fans as it’s one of those rare opportunities where they can actually make money on a straight up win by Chelsea, which in turn makes them the value play as well.
Verdict: Chelsea are after a disappointing Super Cup turnout where they lost to Bayern Munich on penalties. Expect them to bounce back with a convincing victory here at the expense of Everton. Far from pushovers, they will still be hard pressed to come up with much of a resistance.
Swansea vs. Liverpool
Analysis: Liverpool is flying high in Premier League action, enjoying a three-game winning streak which includes wins over Stoke City, Aston Villa and Manchester United. Importantly, all three wins have been clean sheets. Yet, in spite of this strong pace-setting start to the season, Liverpool are tipped at +120 to win outright. That they are found on the long side of even money is rather curious given their fine form and convincing accounts so far against some of the league’s heavyweights (both at home and on the road). Why bookies aren’t tipping them on the short side of even money is anybody’s guess. Suffice it to say, they have to be the value play here.
Swansea got off to a slow start this season with back-to-back defeats to Manchester United and Tottenham, scoring one goal and conceding five combined. Of course, opening against two big names can be unsettling and that’s why it’s a credit to them for bouncing back against West Brom last weekend with a 2-0 win on the road. That though is hardly going to send them into a clash with yet another big name club with any optimism, hence their hefty + 220 odds to win outright.
Verdict: For those hoping Liverpool might come crashing back down to reality with a thud will have to wait for another week (or a few more in fact, looking at their schedule) because it’s hard to see how Liverpool might leak any points here. They are off to a solid start on the season, sitting lotus at the top. They’ll be looking to extend that lead at Swansea and at +120 to win outright they are nice soccer pick for your weekend wagering ticket.
