San Jose and New England should maintain their winning streaks...

PSV vs Basel

Tuesday, July 22, at Philips Stadion

Two big teams meet in the Champions League second qualifying round this week as PSV takes on Basel in Eindhoven. Both of these teams finished runner-up in their respective leagues last season, as PSV trailed Ajax in the Eredivisie and Basel lost out to Young Boys in the Swiss top flight. That means they both have to endure long Champions League qualification campaigns. PSV looks like the better team on paper, although it is acclimatizing to life without last season’s top scorer, Luuk de Jong, who has moved to Sevilla. Yet it still has plenty of firepower from the likes of Hirving Lozano and it should be able to breach the Basel defense in this game. There are serious question marks over PSV’s defense, which kept just one clean sheet in its final six games last season. Both sets of defenses could be rusty after the summer break and that could lead to an open, entertaining game. Basel has some strong attacking options, including Ricky van Wolfswinkel, and it beat Sion 4-1 away to start the new season.

Pick: Both teams to score at -110 with Bet365

New England Revolution vs Orlando City

Saturday, July 27, at Gillette Stadium

New England is in magnificent form right now and it has won four of its last five games to soar up the Eastern Conference table. It leapfrogged Orlando City when it beat Vancouver Whitecaps 4-0 a week ago, and it moved into the playoff positions with a 2-0 victory over FC Cincinnati last time out. New England has fired in 12 goals in its last five games and it is playing with a great deal of confidence and freedom right now. It will also be keen to seize revenge in this game, after losing 2-1 away in Orlando in the US Open round of 16 in June. Since then, Orlando has struggled for form. It lost 1-0 to New York Red Bulls at the weekend and it is unlikely to have much joy at Gillette Stadium now that New England is on song. It has the best record in the MLS over the last eight games, with five wins and three draws, whereas Orlando has suffered three defeats in that time.

Pick: New England -1 Asian handicap at +100 with Bet365

San Jose Earthquakes vs Colorado Rapids

Saturday, July 27, at Avaya Stadium

The Quakes have won five of their last six games and it is time for the rest of the MLS to start treating San Jose like an elite team. It is 8-2-4 over the past three months and it has enjoyed a plus-12 goal difference during that time. It destroyed Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s LA Galaxy twice and secured a creditable draw with table topping LAFC. It lost its first four games of the season, but it has since rallied in style and it is looking every inch the playoff team. A 3-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps at the weekend carried San Jose up to fifth in the table and its rivals are now looking nervously back over their shoulders. Colorado is winless in three games and marooned at the foot of the table, so this match really should be one-way traffic.

Pick: San Jose to win and over 2.5 goals in the game at -120 with Paddy Power
