The Blues head to Newcastle this weekend hoping to continue their winning form at the expense of the Magpies and, certainly, sportsbooks across the board are cornering this match in their camp. Will Chelsea punch at their weight class or will the hosts defy the odds?

Chelsea eyes top spot

A win by Chelsea at Newcastle will lift the Blues to the league’s summit, if only temporarily, with top of the league Arsenal set to take on title rivals Liverpool later in the day. That’s the intriguing back-story to the EPL’s weekend fixtures, a ‘top spot’ battle that actually will come to a head in the fourth round of Capital One League Cup action when Arsenal and Chelsea collide at the Emirates on Tuesday [insert shiver of excitement].

If the soccer odds were any indication, a Chelsea win over Newcastle United at the weekend is as sure as the sun is to rise in the morning, and one has to like the Blues chances really. It’s not that Chelsea is unbeatable or Newcastle United is awful; but if we were to over generalise, it’s because the former is brimming with confidence right now while the latter flounders, wholly off colour and inconsistent in Premier League action. Form alone therefore suggests that a Chelsea win is a good choice for our  soccer picks.

At -150 odds to win outright at Bet365, while on the road, Chelsea is good value as well, all things being considered: they are enjoying a five-game winning streak – eight game unbeaten streak – across all competitions; offense is hitting its stride with Torres seemingly finding his mojo of late; and defence is tight and solid, allowing no more than a goal in each game during this positive run while contributing to four clean sheets.

Chelsea are flush off a victory over Man City, a high-profile soccer-betting affair on the EPL’s card at the weekend that saw them stay within two points of pace-setters Arsenal. Newcastle United meanwhile were a flop at the weekend, succumbing to a shock defeat at Sunderland.

It can’t sit well with Alan Perdew to not only lose a derby but also to hand his opposite’s first win on the season.  After a positive spate of results – a win over Cardiff City and a draw against Liverpool – the Magpies looked to be in a great position to heap more misery on Sunderland. Tale told ‘Black Cats finally Get a Win’, scream headlines this week, leaving Perdew and Co. to quiet the noise, answer tough questions, particularly how to get back on track against Chelsea at St. James Park at the weekend.

Newcastle are snug as a bug in 11th spot, a mid-table position albeit one that rests only on a three-point cushion over Norwich City in the relegation zone. The three points therefore (or any points for that matter) on offer in week 10 are crucial towards remaining at the heart of the table or therein. But it’s hard to imagine how they would do it. It doesn’t help their cause either when odds makers demonstrate little faith, listing Magpies at a whopping +400 to beat Blues and at +275 to force the draw at Bet365.

Soccer Verdict: Pundits are certainly tipping week 10 as a pivotal week in EPL with Chelsea expected to apply the pressure on Arsene Wenger and his Gunners. A fact that is evinced nowhere more so than by the revised Premier League Futures 2013-2014 market that now has Chelsea installed as the new title favourites at +188 over Man City at +240 and Arsenal at +400. So a Chelsea win over Newcastle United is de rigueur (if you will), an obligatory thank you – the least Mourinho can do – for the markets vote of confidence. The timing couldn’t be more perfect either, with Newcastle stumbling against bottom feeders Sunderland and the pressure mounting on Perdew and his men, Chelsea should have no trouble punching at their weight class and, as such, we’re plumping down to their -150 odds to win outright as our favourite sports pick in this matchup.
