Who can forget the heady days when Newcastle United were contenders for the championship and they enjoyed thrilling 4-3 matches against Liverpool? Those days seem to be long gone and these days Newcastle look to be aiming for mid-table mediocrity while Liverpool have a chance to go top of the table and unfurl a banner that says "...above us only sky." Still, is there a chance to make some money on this game with our sports picks?

Enough with the lyrics… WHERE’S THE MONEY, MIKE?

At the time of this writing -and before a single ball has been kicked- Liverpool are second in the English Premier League, tied at 16 points with top place Arsenal after seven games. Liverpool have the same goal difference and have scored three goals less than the Gunners (but they have a better defence.)

Liverpool have only one defeat and one draw from their seven games this term in the league; but, it's a very, very different story for Newcastle.

The Geordies are all the way down in 11th place, tied on points with Aston Villa and a little team called Manchester United after the same seven games. There are just three wins in Newcastle's bank this term, along with three defeats and a single draw. The fact that they are tied on points with Manchester United would have been something to be excited and joyous about a few years ago but that was when Manchester United stayed at the top of the Premier League from the opening weekend until the season's close. Newcastle will be more concerned with the teams below them than the reigning champions just above them.

Seriously, Mike… WHERE’S THE MONEY?

The bookies only see one winner out of this match as they list Liverpool at 5/6, Newcastle at 3/1 and a draw at 5/2 in the soccer betting odds

The numbers aren't biased against the proper northerners, since who can complain about the fact that Newcastle run hot and cold? Presently, even when they're hot, they really are just lukewarm. Liverpool, by comparison, are the sort of side that fans can get excited about again.

Liverpool came out on top in the last two league games with a 3-1 scoreline, which is offered up at 15/1. Newcastle on the other hand, have scored two in their last two games but were 2-1 victors (as predicted by a certain Humble Handicapper) and 3-2 losers (also predicted by the same) when they played Cardiff and Everton in their last two away fixtures.

Soccer Odds Usually Favour a Home Win, But This Time…

You might think that home advantage will be a massive advantage in Newcastle, but consider the last time they face Liverpool in St. James Park they were on the wrong end of a 6-0 stoning. A repeat of that score is available at 250/1.

Looking at the last five meetings between these two sides, it's been three to Liverpool, one to Newcastle and a single draw. I do think the best the Geordies can hope for is a draw.

I think if Liverpool get one goal in then they will probably get more than one, so don't be shy betting on more than 2.5 goals at 29/40. Although less than 2.5 goals with the sportsbooks is 43/40. I think Newcastle can score a goal, but anything they get will be a consolation. Consider Liverpool for your soccer picks.
