The Earthquakes have really had a tough go of it this season and it doesn't get any easier against Bradley Wright-Phillips and the Red Bulls this weekend. What kind of soccer betting odds are on offer and who are we backing?
One of the top favorites of the day will be the Red Bulls, quoted at -125 on the soccer betting odds board.
We see San Jose priced out at a generous price of +350, with a draw at approximately +250.
New York Red Bulls
All of New York's built up momentum evaporated on Wednesday, as they fell to Philadelphia 3-1 at PPL Park.
The Red Bulls had their fair share of chances, controlling possession and putting up seven shots on goal (compared to the Union's four), but they were wasteful and it came back to haunt them. Bradley Wright-Phillips was the lone goalscorer in the loss.
Despite losing, New York is still very much in the playoff picture. They're in fourth place in the Eastern Conference but are even with New England and only one point ahead of Philadelphia.
With things heating up in the standings, a win would go a long way for the Red Bulls. They'll be glad to be back at home, where they've been scoring goals for fun so far in the 2014 campaign. Through eight matches at Red Bull Arena they've tallied 19 goals.
Wright-Phillips continues to make lethal contributions game in and game out, but New York could use some more production out of the highly experienced tandem of Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill. The pair only has five league goals between them.
San Jose Earthquakes
What a stirring downfall it's been for the Earthquakes. We've gotten accustomed to seeing them challenge near the top of the conference over the years, but this season has been filled with one disappointment after another.
As of now, San Jose is in dead last in the Western Conference, having earned a mere 16 points through 16 matches. They haven't been too shabby defensively, allowing only 16 total goals, but they've had a mighty difficult time finding the back of the net on a consistent basis. Heading into the weekend, they've scored 16 times overall.
The Earthquakes have been off since last weekend's 2-1 home loss against DC United. They went down 2-0 in the first half and even Chris Wondolowski's goal wasn't enough to spur on the hosts, who finished with 18 total shots, nine of which were on goal.
It was yet another reminder of San Jose's incompetence in front of net. Wondolowski is the only member of the squad to have scored more than two goals. Strikers Steven Lenhart and Alan Gordon have both been disappointing, failing to score a single goal so far in 2014.
Something has to change for the Earthquakes. Grabbing a rare win away from home could be exactly the kind of kick in the rear they need.
Despite falling short in their last match, we fully expect the Red Bulls to re-gain their confidence and brush aside the struggling Earthquakes.
San Jose may have had extra time to prepare for this clash, but they've done little to deserve our backing with our sports picks. They've won just one time away from home this season, while totaling only four goals in those six matches.
In short, New York has been the better overall team throughout the year, especially when it comes to scoring goals, and we believe they're the way to go this weekend. Back the Red Bulls to secure the win at home.
