A game that truly could define the EPL season kicks off on Boxing day and regardless of what Santa brings (or doesn’t) your Humble Handicapper will be very merry winning money when Manchester City host Liverpool.

We’ve got one more round of games before the Xmas calendar comes into full effect but we simply have to mention the way the table is set before Xmas when we talk about Liverpool and Manchester City. Liverpool are second on 33 points, just two points behind Arsenal while City are one point worse off on 32. That means both sides really are table topping contenders. This is as good a time as any to mention that Liverpool l are 13/2 with the sports books to win the league and City are 5/4 (favourites).

We also need to mention that as well as being a six point match for the title (yes really) this is also a clash between the two most prolific scoring sides in the EPL.

The soccer odds will have to contend with the fact Liverpool have scored 39 goals in their 16 game this season while City have clocked up 47, (yes 47). That averages out at a little over two per game for Liverpool and almost three per game for City.

You might want to have little punt on the game ending 3-2 to City, at 20/1 but your Humble Handicapper thinks that this one will be a little more complex than that.

Enough with the complexities…WHERE’S THE MONEY MIKE?

Liverpool have only won one more game than City all season, but it’s City’s home form that speaks the loudest about who will win this one.

Liverpool have scored 14 goals in their last three games but City have score 15 their last three home league games.

If you want more reason to back goals you should know that the EPL’s top two goal scorers play for these sides, that’s Luis Suarez for Liverpool and Sergio Agureo for city.

Good news for Liverpool

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero could well be out of action for up to eight weeks, according to manager Manuel Pellegrini. City's leading scorer this season with 19 goals, injured his calf during their 6-3 victory over Arsenal.

Looking at the head to head stats shows us that the last three meetings between these sides have all ended drawn, and all by the same score 2-2. I'd say stay well away from that score, as lightning won’t strike four times, although it of offered up at soccer odds of 14/1.

In fact any draw is at 3/1 and a home win is at 7/10 and an away win is at 18/5.

It’s honours even looking at the last five meetings as we have three draws and a win apiece for each side. But I think we need to discount past form and look to the future.

City have a better league winning pedigree, and I fear that Liverpool will run City close (in this game and in the title race ) but won't quite have the legs for it. Take City with the victory for your soccer picks.

Prediction: City win 2-1 available at 17/2 with BetVictor.
