The Old Lady may still be a ways away from being considered among the true elite in Europe, but they're still the cream of the crop in the Serie A.
Right now Juventus is the favorite at even odds to get three points on Monday, with a Lazio victory quoted in a wide range of +240 to +340 soccer betting odds. A draw is in and around the +250 area.
A 2-0 deficit from the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final was too much for Lazio to overcome, as they were held to a 1-1 draw in the return tie to lose 3-1 on aggregate.
Senad Lulic had given the Eagles some hope with a goal in the 61st minute to put the game at 2-1 on aggregate, but Fenerbahce scored just over 10 minutes later to put the tie out of reach.
It wasn't the way Lazio wanted to go out in front of their own fans, but they don't have much time to stew over what went right and what went wrong. They face an even more daunting opponent in Juventus on Monday.
Currently the Eagles are in fifth place in Serie A, but they're just one point ahead of Inter for that final Europa League spot. The Eagles, ideally, would like to snatch a Champions League spot, but they're seven points back of AC Milan, meaning they need to go on a great run to close out the season.
Lazio has been able to hold their own on their home turf this season. In 16 league matches, they've picked up 11 victories, two draws, and three losses, to go along with a more than respectable plus-13 goal differential.
It was a bitter end to Juventus' Champions League run, as they crashed out 4-0 on aggregate to a superior Bayern Munich outfit. The Germans were able to win 2-0 in each leg.
Juventus did have some scoring chances in the first leg up in Munich, so it was expected that they could give the Bavarians a lot to think about at home. That wasn't the case though, as Bayern held their nerve defensively and controlled the tempo throughout.
Though their European aspirations are over, Juventus can take some comfort in knowing they have been excellent in Serie A action. They have a nine-point lead over Napoli and are 13 points clear of third-place AC Milan.
Unlike Lazio, Juventus has gotten the job done away from home too, explaining why they are where they are. They've gone 10-3-2 outside of Juventus Stadium and have held opposing teams to a total of 12 goals in 15 matches.
There hasn't been one true standout for the league leaders either, though Mirko Vucinic (nine goals, six assists) has been outstanding. A terrific balance all over the pitch has been key, as eight different players have scored at least five Serie A goals apiece.
Serie A Pick
Essentially all of Lazio's troubles have come away from Stadio Olimpico, so at least the Eagles have that going for them.
They will catch a Juventus side that could be feeling a bit down on themselves, though the pure quality of The Old Lady should keep them competitive here
This should be a great 90 minutes of action between two of Italy's best, and when the final whistle blows we think a draw could be on the cards. A point would be just fine for Juventus in this situation, so we expect them to be cautious with their tactics and do enough to get at least a draw for our Sports Picks.
