Inter Milan and Roma collide in Serie A at the weekend, marking match day 7 in the Italian top-flight league. Here’s a primer on this renowned rivalry that’s set to kick off on Saturday complete with select odds and soccer picks.

Betting on the winner

Roma are off to a perfect start on the season with six straight wins and top spot in their clutches. They are the only team not to have leaked any points in Italy’s top-flight league and they’ve also allowed just a single goal through six laps while scoring 17; middleweights Parma own the dubious honour of having beaten De Sanctis between the posts.

Over the last few seasons Roma’s struggles and strife have been well documented. However, this season looks to be already different. A new coach and infusion of veterans like Maicon (formerly of Inter Milan) and much-needed youth with Tin Jedvaj and Adam Ljajic (three goals in six games) appear to be making an immediate impact.

A side note: If you like what you’ve seen so far from the Giallorossi, they are listed as the third favourites to win the Serie A title at +700 at Bet365 right now and given their current form (though long the season is) they might prove to be the early value pick in continental European soccer betting.

Last lap was arguably their most impressive performance – a 5-0 win over Bologna. So outclassed, outplayed and outmuscled were they that it’s hard not to marvel at this very talented and impressive instalment of Giallorossi. Gervinho scored a brace while Florenzi, Benatia and Ljajic contribute the rest.

Six wins and five clean sheets in six matches is quite an impressive start to a season. Yet despite such convincing form, Roma are heading to the fashion Mecca Milan as the hefty underdogs at +200 at Bet365. Not because bookies aren’t buying what they are selling but rather the quality of their opponent is good enough to challenge that run of form. Or so it seems.

In fact, Roma have yet to take on top opposition in Serie A. Fourth-placed Inter Milan at the weekend will be the first occasion they do and the first real measure of Roma.

That said in recent history Roma have fared rather well against Inter Milan. Last year, they beat Inter twice in Coppa Italia and in Serie A they are unbeaten in their last four meetings with three wins and a draw. Last year, they managed a 1-1 draw on the away and a 2-1 win in the reverse fixture.

Nonetheless Inter Milan (4-2-0) are listed as the sportsbook favourites in this clash but just shy of even money at +125 at Bet365. Is Inter due a win over Roma?

Inter are undefeated this season however they’ve twice floundered, leaking points on draws to Juventus and Cagliari. While the former can be considered a positive result – after all there can never be any shame in sharing the spoils with defending titleholders – the latter was inexplicable. A missed opportunity that not only cost them points but also third place in the table.

If their last match were any indication, it doesn’t bode well for an Inter win. Speaking of the draw, bookies have installed the draw result at the largest odds for this match at +250 at Bet365 and at +240 at William Hill.

Verdict: Roma began the season with purpose in mind: to win the Serie A this season. And, well, haven’t they underscored it admirably so far.

If nothing else, they are very convincing right now. They are playing some beautiful football and scoring with abandon. Importantly, they look very solid on defence with just a goal conceded in six games.

To all intents and purposes, the pressure is going to be entirely on Roma to defend their run of form and, in turn, to attempt to extend it at Inter’s expense. It’s a big ask. Certainly it could go either way, hence there is sports betting value on both sides of this coin. But form alone says it’s possible and that’s why we’re plumping down to a Roma win at +200 odds.

Soccer Free Picks: Roma to win outright at +200

Bonus Picks: Over 2.5 at -138 at Bet365 and Adam Ljajic and/or Gervinho to score anytime at +225 at William Hill.
